    Description:

    St. Andrew’s Manor is seeking a Tai Chi Instructor to lead gentle movement sessions for residents who have expressed strong interest in physical and wellness activities. This volunteer will guide seniors through Tai Chi exercises that promote balance, flexibility, relaxation, and overall well-being.

    Sessions can be scheduled on weekdays, Monday through Friday, and may occur bi-weekly or monthly depending on the volunteer’s availability and resident interest. Class times are flexible and will be coordinated with the Service Coordinator. Knowledge of Mandarin or Cantonese is helpful but not required.

    Reports to:

    Volunteer Coordinator and the site’s Service Coordinator

    Goal of Position:

    To provide senior residents with opportunities for physical movement and mindfulness while supporting their overall physical, mental, and emotional wellness.

    Specific Tasks:

    1. Prepare an agenda for each Tai Chi session, including exercises or movements appropriate for seniors.
    2. Lead residents through Tai Chi exercises, offering clear instructions, encouragement, and positive feedback.
    3. Monitor attendance by ensuring all participating residents sign the sign-in sheet.
    4. Provide guidelines or safety reminders related to the activity.
    5. Offer one-on-one support to residents as needed while encouraging independence.
    6. Listen to resident feedback and remain open to suggestions, questions, and pacing needs.
    7. Assist with setting up and cleaning up the space, including moving chairs or tables as needed and restoring the room afterward.
    8. Communicate any supply needs or concerns with the Service Coordinator or Volunteer Coordinator.

    Qualifications:

    Physical/Age Requirements:

    • Ability to remain physically active for a one-hour exercise class.
    • Ability to move chairs or tables to create a safe, open activity space.

    Skills/Education/Experience:

    • Experience or education in exercise, Tai Chi, or movement instruction is preferred.
    • Prior teaching or group facilitation experience is a plus.
    • Comfortable working independently with senior residents.
    • Friendly, patient, open-minded, and supportive approach.
    • Interest in working with seniors and diverse communities.
    • CPR and First Aid certification is strongly preferred.
    • Ability to speak Mandarin or Cantonese is helpful but not required.
