Academic Program Leader (Board Member Position) - Empowering young dual-language learners

    About Vecinos Unidos

Vecinos Unidos makes a difference in the lives of students in grades 1-6 through homework assistance and summer enrichment programs-and we’ve been doing so since 1997! We provide free academic assistance and enrichment to elementary students who come from non-English speaking homes and have fallen behind their peers. With our caring volunteers to guide them, students experience improved academic success and greater confidence in their ability to learn and achieve.

    About the Role

We're looking for a hands-on leader who enjoys working directly with students and helping guide our organization.

As a board member, you'll volunteer in our Academic Assistance program, supporting students and fellow volunteers while helping create a welcoming, productive learning environment. You'll also serve on our Board of Directors, attending monthly virtual meetings to contribute ideas, participate in organizational decisions, and help shape the future of Vecinos Unidos.

This role is ideal for someone who wants to make a direct impact on students while contributing to the long-term success of a local nonprofit. This is a hands-on position for someone passionate about education, equity, and community service.

    Responsibilities

    • Volunteer during our Academic Assistance program one to three afternoons each week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, 4:00–6:30 p.m.).
    • Support and oversee volunteers and staff members during program hours.
    • Attend and actively contribute to monthly (virtual) board meetings.
    • Participate in board discussions, strategic planning, and organizational decisions.
    • Lead or assist with special projects that strengthen our program.
    • Serve as an ambassador for Vecinos Unidos in the community.

    What We're Looking For

    Required

    • Must be at least 18 years old.
    • Availability to volunteer one to three afternoons per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, 4:00–6:30 p.m.).
    • Ability to attend one virtual Board of Directors meeting each month.
    • Ability to serve a renewable board term.
    • Dependable, collaborative, and comfortable taking initiative.
    • Complete a successful background check.

    Preferred (Not Required)

    • Experience working with children, youth programs, volunteers, or nonprofit organizations.
    • Leadership, mentoring, or project coordination experience.

No previous board experience or Spanish language skills are required. We provide orientation and support to help new board members understand their responsibilities and become successful contributors.

    Commitment

1-3 days a week in person available:

    • Wednesday: 4:30 to 6:30 pm EST
    • Thursday: 4:30 to 6:30 pm EST
    • Friday: 4:30 to 6:30 pm EST

    What You'll Gain

    • The opportunity to make a lasting difference in students’ educational success.
    • Leadership experience in both the classroom and nonprofit governance.
    • Experience with strategic planning and nonprofit decision-making.
    • A chance to work alongside a dedicated and diverse team of volunteers.
