    Description

    The Clinical Research Data Science Intern (Remote) plays a critical role in leveraging machine

    learning and predictive analytics to support the mission of the Kiona Foundation. This volunteer

    position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful pediatric cancer research by

    building data-driven models, analyzing clinical datasets, and uncovering insights that inform early

    detection and treatment strategies. Interns in this role collaborate with a dedicated team of

    clinicians and researchers to advance the Foundation’s strategic priorities in patient care, family

    support, and community health innovation.

    Time Commitment

    Expected commitment is 5-7 hrs/week, with flexibility based on availability and project needs. This

    is a remote volunteer position unless otherwise specified.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Collaborate on clinical studies such as the ECS Deficiency Study and Andre’s Blend trial by

    managing participant onboarding and tracking progress through structured data pipelines.

    * Integrate and monitor biometric and survey data submissions via digital platforms like

    OnTracka to support real-time analytics and modeling efforts.

    * Collect, clean, and de-identify clinical datasets to ensure data privacy and research

    integrity for downstream machine learning applications.

    * Assist the Principal Investigator and co-investigators with literature reviews, regulatory

    compliance tracking, and milestone reporting, contributing to data-informed decision-

    making and study design optimization.

    Minimum Qualifications

    * Proficiency in Python for data analysis and machine learning, including libraries such as

    pandas, NumPy, and scikit-learn

    * Experience with data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation

    * Ability to analyze and interpret clinical or healthcare datasets while maintaining data

    privacy and confidentiality

    * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail * Effective verbal and written communication skills to present findings clearly to both

    technical and non-technical audiences

    * Demonstrated interest in clinical research, public health, or healthcare innovation

    Preferred Qualifications

    * Hands-on experience with predictive modeling (e.g., logistic regression, decision trees,

    neural networks) on clinical or biomedical datasets

    * Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), biometric tools, or platforms like OnTracka

    * Experience supporting IRB processes, performing literature reviews, or tracking study

    milestones

    * Familiarity with SQL or cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) for managing and analyzing

    research data

    * Passion for contributing to pediatric cancer research and community health initiatives.
