    Description

Board Member – Wayland Museum & Historical Society Wayland, MA | Volunteer | Ongoing

    About Us

The Wayland Museum & Historical Society preserves and shares the history of Wayland, Massachusetts — from its indigenous roots through the present day. We operate the historic Grout-Heard House, maintain a growing collection of artifacts and archival materials, and develop public programming that connects community members to the people and places that shaped this town. We are a small, active organization with big ambitions, and our volunteer Board of Managers is central to everything we do.

    The Role

Board members provide governance, strategic direction, and hands-on support for the museum's work. This is a working board and members are expected to be engaged partners in advancing the organization's mission, not just attendees at meetings.

    Responsibilities

    • Attend monthly Board meetings (typically held in the evening)
    • Participate in at least one committee or area of focus (programming, fundraising, collections, communications, etc.)
    • Support fundraising efforts, including donor cultivation and event participation
    • Act as an ambassador for the museum in the broader Wayland community
    • Contribute to strategic planning and organizational decision-making
    • Assist with events and public programming as capacity allows

    Qualifications

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. You do not need prior museum or nonprofit experience. We are especially interested in people with skills or experience in:

    • Fundraising, development, or grant writing
    • Finance or accounting
    • Marketing, communications, or social media
    • Education or community outreach
    • Legal or nonprofit governance
    • Local history or archival research
    • Event planning or project management

Most importantly, we're looking for people who care about Wayland's history and want to help build something lasting for this community.

    Time Commitment

Approximately 4–6 hours per month, including monthly meetings. Additional time may be required around events or special initiatives.
