    Volunteer Grant Writer

    ABOUT MINDSET OVER EVERYTHING

Mindset Over Everything (MOE) is a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in Oakley and serving youth across California.

We’re building our foundation and looking for a volunteer grant writer to help connect our mission with funding opportunities that fit our plans and capacity.

    OUR MISSION

To remove financial barriers and empower young people through sports, movement, and mentorship to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and reach their full potential.

    OUR VISION

A world where no young person’s potential is limited by financial circumstances, and every child has the opportunity to discover their strengths, find their purpose, and build a future beyond what they imagined possible.

    OUR FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

    • Safety: Protect and support young people.
    • Respect: Honor each young person’s dignity, strengths, and experience.
    • Belonging: Build an inclusive community where each young person feels welcomed, valued, and connected.

    ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

You’ll work with MOE leadership to research grants, organize deadlines, and prepare clear, accurate application materials.

This is a remote volunteer opportunity with occasional virtual check-ins. The anticipated commitment is approximately 3–5 hours per week, with manageable projects and deadlines agreed in advance.

The role reports to the Executive Director or designated development lead.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Research foundation, corporate, and public funding opportunities.
    • Review eligibility, funding restrictions, application requirements, and deadlines.
    • Maintain a grant calendar and track application status and reporting dates.
    • Draft letters of inquiry, grant narratives, and supporting materials.
    • Coordinate proposed budgets and program information with MOE leadership and designated finance support.
    • Organize grant files and funder communications in MOE-approved systems.
    • Flag missing information, potential conflicts of interest, or requirements that exceed MOE’s current capacity.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Strong writing, editing, and research skills.
    • Organization and reliable follow-through.
    • Clear communication about progress, availability, and deadlines.
    • Care with confidential information.
    • Comfort using shared documents, spreadsheets, and online research tools.
    • An interest in expanding opportunities for California youth.

Previous grant writing experience is helpful but not required. Relevant experience in research, communications, proposal writing, or fundraising is welcome. No specific degree is required.

    VOLUNTEER SERVICE AND SUPPORT

This is freely chosen charitable volunteer service without an expectation of wages or a promise of future employment. No commission, percentage of grant funds, or award-based compensation is offered. Volunteers may decline assignments or end service.

We’ll agree on projects, availability, and review dates before work begins. MOE provides an assigned contact, approved organizational information, and feedback on drafts.

Proposed expenses require advance written approval. Reimbursement terms must be confirmed before costs are incurred.

    GRANT INTEGRITY AND APPROVAL

Use accurate, supportable information and respect funder requirements. Do not invent outcomes, disclose confidential information, or use another organization’s materials without permission. Disclose potential conflicts of interest to the assigned lead.

MOE leadership reviews and approves every application before submission. This role does not independently authorize submissions, agreements, spending, matching funds, program commitments, or acceptance of grant conditions.

    CONFIDENTIALITY AND YOUTH SAFETY

Use MOE-approved systems and protect organizational, donor, financial, youth, and family information.

This assignment does not include direct youth contact. Any future youth-facing assignment requires prior authorization and completion of applicable screening, training, and MOE safety requirements before contact begins.

    FAIR ACCESS AND ACCOMMODATIONS

MOE welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds. Selection is based on role-related skills and organizational needs, without discrimination based on characteristics protected by applicable law. MOE does not tolerate harassment or retaliation.

To request a reasonable accommodation during recruitment or volunteer service, contact hi@mindsetovereverythingca.org or 925-392-1711. You do not need to disclose a diagnosis in your initial inquiry.
