    Description

Portola Library is looking for an individual who can provide tech help to library patrons. We are looking for a commitment of at least 3 hours a week, at a consistent time (or times) every week.

Once a time commitment is made, the tech help hours will be advertised to library patrons so they can drop in and ask for help within the allotted time.

The goal is to establish a consistent period of time where patrons can reliably find knowledgeable help navigating their technology related issues.

As a drop-in tech help volunteer, you will wait in the library during your agreed-upon hours for patrons to ask you for help.

It’s understood that no one can be an expert in all forms of technology. Most patrons have tech related issues that any averagely tech proficient individual is likely to be able to resolve.

    Common problems that patrons have:

    • Email related (sending an email, adding an attachment, creating an email)
    • Printing related (printing from an email, etc.)
    • Getting started with new tech (computers, ipads, phones)
    • And other common tech management issues (tracking down lost login information, downloading apps, basic computer skills)

This volunteer position is based at the Portola Library and managed through the Literacy Program at Portola Library.

    Ideal candidates for this role:

    • Someone with a comfortable proficiency with technology in general
    • Someone comfortable working closely with members of our diverse community
    • A problem-solver, willing to tackle issues that might not initially have a clear-cut solution
    • Someone with a professional, friendly attitude who understands the importance of discretion when presented with sensitive information

The essential steps to becoming a volunteer:

    1. Go through the initial application and interview process
    2. Fingerprinting and background check
      1. The fingerprinting and signing of paperwork must be coordinated closely with HR in Quincy (the staff of Portola Library and/or Literacy will work with you on this).
      2. There is a fee for the fingerprinting (typically $25) which you will pay initially and then be refunded by the county.
    3. Basic training and orientation in your new position as a volunteer
