    Description

    Lab Assistants help students during regularly scheduled computer lab times. Students utilize the lab for language learning software, job search, homework, and more.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Supervise the computer lab during your scheduled shift.
    • Keyboarding Lab:
      • Help students log on/off computers
      • Answer questions regarding correct typing techniques
    • Open Computer Lab:
      • Help students log on/off computers.
      • Support students if they have any questions regarding their homework
    • Roles and responsibilities vary slightly by Job Training and Education Center location
    • Other assignments as needed

    Reports to: Center Manager or Volunteer Supervisor

    Role Requirements & Abilities:

    • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, or an interest in learning about it
    • Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities
    • A solid understanding of, or interest in learning about, cultural humility and cultural responsiveness
    • Reliable, punctual, and consistent
    • Patient, understanding, and caring
    • Strong listening skills
    • Strong computer skills
    • General Open Lab/ Career Building Lab/ Keyboarding Lab:
      • Experience with (or the ability to learn) WorkSource job search resources, language learning software, online job readiness resources, basic keyboarding techniques, and more. Volunteers will spend time familiarizing themselves with specific software before they begin volunteering

    Essential Physical Abilities:

    • Able to safely lift/push/pull up to 10 lbs., grasp, handle, finger, and manipulate items; perform repetitive fine motor functions with fingers, wrists and arms. Able to traverse a wide variety of physical environments without assistance, including uneven surfaces and stairs. Able to communicate with others effectively, verbally and in writing, including those who have limited English skills, large groups, small groups, and individuals. Able to use standard office equipment without assistance.

    Working Environment/Conditions:

    • Classroom setting; moderate noise level.
