Description
Our organization works with young adults with special needs. They are generally only needing minimal support, but often, parents/guardians are still managing tasks they need to learn to do for themselves as adults. We are working on helping the parents land the helicopter, but we need someone to help teach them some basics, such as skin care, choosing clothing that is appropriate for work and weather conditions, applying makeup, brushing and styling their own hair, shaving (face), and establishing good habits such as brushing teeth and using mouthwash throughout the day. Workshops run in 30 min blocks, and we would love someone to run 1-2 workshops per week - whatever time works for you. We are open 9-4, but also have hours 4-6 on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you need two blocks of time, we would be happy to set up 1-hour workshops with you. Our greatest need is to help some of our members with challenges due to mobiity - so if you have ideas for teaching how to tie hair back (ponytail holders are challenging for those with poor fine motor skills) or makeup application - we'd love to meet you! Helping people feel good about succesfully styling their own wardrobe or applying their makeup is all part of building confidence and empowering independence. We can't expect our young adults to take on responsibility for themselves without that?! If you can inspire that - please reach out! I've put 12 as the number of volunteers, but we welcome 1 person to do multiple visits, or 12 or more people to come in and spend a half a day with us and teach us to brush and style our hair!
Location
Suite 2013
Directions
Our suite is a second floor office above the Bagel Club in Flemington. Parking and entrance are BEHIND the building, and you will find our suite between 2002 and 2004 - look for the glass double-door with the large green awning. You will see a purple picnic table and red umbrella, and a large "2013" on the glass doors. Come upstairs and ring the bell. If you need an elevator, you will need to go to the other end of the strip to the green awning (says "20") and it is a single glass door with gold sign to the left (says 'StarThrower Group". The elevator is there and you can follow the hall to our office. If you need help with opening doors, please call 908-655-5234 when you arrive and we will meet you at the elevator entrance to assist.
