11th Hour/Hospice Vigil Volunteer

Your presence alone can provide deep comfort to both the patient and their loved ones, reassuring families that their loved one is not alone. This sacred role is especially meaningful for those who are compassionate, calm under pressure, and comfortable in emotionally tender situations. You will be part of a small, dedicated team of volunteers who are called upon when the need arises-often during evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays.

Whether you stay for one hour or four, your time matters. You don’t need medical expertise-just a caring heart and the ability to sit in silence, offer presence, and witness the end of life with dignity and compassion.

Primary Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Vigil visits - sitting bedside with patients in their final hours or days to ensure they are not alone
• Providing a calm and reassuring presence to both patients and their families
• Holding hands, reading softly, playing soothing music, or offering quiet companionship
• Alerting hospice staff if any needs or concerns arise during a vigil visit

Time Commitment:

There is no required minimum number of hours. Vigil visits are typically 2-4 hours and may occur during the day, overnight, or on weekends/holidays-timing is flexible and based on your availability. Volunteers are contacted as vigil needs arise and can choose whether they are able to respond.

Educational/Professional:

Successful completion of the 7-hour online OnCare volunteer training is required. Training is self-paced and web-based. After online training, volunteers are supported through in-person or virtual shadowing visits with the Volunteer Coordinator until they feel confident to serve independently.
