    Description

A hospice volunteer’s day is usually simple, quiet, and very human. It rarely looks dramatic or clinical. Most days feel more like visiting a neighbor or grandparent.

Here’s what a typical volunteer visit day might look like:

    Morning: Preparing for Visits

    A volunteer might:

    • Check their schedule or patient assignment
    • Call the patient or caregiver to confirm the visit
    • Pick up a volunteer packet or supplies from the hospice office
    • Drive to the patient’s home or facility
    • Hospice volunteers visit patients wherever they call home: Private homes, Assisted living, Nursing homes & Memory care facilities

During the Visit (Usually 30–60 minutes)

Every visit is different, but many look like this:

    • Sitting and talking about the patient’s life
    • Listening to stories about family, work, or childhood
    • Watching TV together
    • Playing cards or simple games
    • Listening to music
    • Looking at photo albums
    • Reading aloud
    • Sitting quietly so the patient isn’t alone

    Sometimes volunteers also:

    • Take a short walk with the patient in a hallway or garden
    • Help with a simple legacy project or memory book
    • Give a caregiver a short break

Volunteers do not provide medical care.

Their role is companionship and presence.

    After the Visit

    Many volunteers will:

    • Write a short note about the visit & submit their volunteer hours
    • Let the volunteer coordinator know if anything important happened

This helps the hospice team stay connected with the patient.

    What Volunteers Often Say

Many volunteers say they expected hospice to feel sad, but instead they find it:

    • peaceful
    • meaningful
    • full of life stories
    • deeply human

One volunteer described it this way:

"Most visits feel like sitting with a grandparent and hearing stories you don't want the world to forget."

    Time Commitment

    Most hospice volunteers:

Visit about 1–2 hours per week or 10 hours per month

Volunteers choose the patients and schedule that works best for them.
