    About A Free Bird

    A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City that empowers children affected by cancer through arts education. Our programs support emotional healing and self-expression through creative mediums including acting, visual art, music, writing, poetry, and singing.

    Position Overview

    A Free Bird is seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate Acting Tutor to provide in-person acting instruction for children affected by cancer in Mountainside, New Jersey. The tutor will work with children ages 4–18, using theater exercises, improvisation, storytelling, and performance techniques to build confidence, creativity, communication skills, and self-expression. This is a paid position.

    Responsibilities

    • Facilitate engaging in-person acting sessions for children ages 4–18.
    • Develop and submit structured lesson plans to the Programs Director and/or Take Flight Programs Coordinator.
    • Teach age-appropriate acting techniques, improvisation, storytelling, movement, and character development.
    • Encourage creativity, teamwork, confidence, and self-expression through theater activities.
    • Document sessions and submit any required materials following program guidelines.
    • Complete pre-session and post-session evaluations via Google Forms.
    • Observe participant well-being and promptly communicate any concerns to the appropriate A Free Bird staff member.
    • Communicate professionally and compassionately with children, parents, caregivers, and program staff.
    • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for every participant.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Drama, Performing Arts, Theatre Education, or a related field preferred.
    • At least one year of experience teaching acting, theater, or performing arts to children or youth.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Energetic, patient, creative, and dependable.
    • Experience working with children affected by serious illness is a plus.

    Time Commitment

    • Paid position
    • On-site in Mountainside, New Jersey
    • 4-hour sessions (weekly or as scheduled)
