Description
Machine Literate is building free, interactive AI-literacy lessons for students in grades 5–12, like Brilliant or Duolingo but for understanding how AI works, where it goes wrong and how to use it responsibly.
We have a full course outline (24 lessons). We need writers to turn lesson plans into short, hands-on steps where students predict, try something and get feedback.
What you'd do:
- Write lesson steps, examples, questions and feedback for wrong answers
- Make explanations clear for a 10–14-year-old with no coding background
- Work from our outline and get feedback from the team
Good fit if you: write clearly, enjoy explaining things simply, and have some interest in AI. Teachers, curriculum writers, education students and science communicators are all welcome.
Commitment: Flexible and task-based. Start with one lesson section.
Our mission: Make AI literacy free for every student, so they understand how AI works and learn to use it responsibly.
Why I started this: At my school, the head of school once said we are "afraid of the machines." That stuck with me. AI is going to be part of every student's future, so schools shouldn't fear it. They should teach it, and teach it responsibly.
About us: I'm Aditya Jhalani, and I founded Machine Literate, Inc., a New York nonprofit. We're pre-launch, and our first volunteers will help shape how everything works.
How it works: Remote, unpaid, adults 18+. Accepted volunteers join our team Slack and pick a first task. No calls required, but happy to talk if you'd like. You can pause or stop anytime. Unless you're a tutor, you won't work directly with students or see any student information.
How to apply: Click Apply on this page and answer a few short questions. It takes about 2 minutes and no résumé is needed.
