    2 hours per week plus travel time for at least 9 and up to 12 weeks. 1.5 hours of teaching and .5 hour meeting. Prison is about an hour from Pittsburgh. We reimburse for travel expenses.

    Description

    College Bridge Instructor

    The Petey Greene Program’s (PGP) College Bridge classes offer incarcerated adults with GED or high school education the support they need to matriculate into college in prison programs. We offer a developmental math and writing course once each semester. Instructors provide direct instruction and PGP trained tutors work with students outside of class time to help them complete coursework. PGP provides curricular support and training on carceral institutions and how to navigate the complexities of teaching inside.

    Responsibilities:

    • Weekly teaching for 1.5 hours at a prison for at least 9 and up to 12 weeks
    • Attend PGP and College Bridge orientations and trainings (5 hours of pre-service training + 30 minute weekly meetings)
    • Communicate with tutors and PGP staff
    • Provide students feedback on their work
    • Instructors will have to apply for background clearance and attend a facility custody training. PGP will walk you through these processes.

    Qualifications:

    • Interest in educational justice and a desire to make a difference for incarcerated people
    • Desired Qualifications:
    • MA or Ph.D. in relevant field (STEM for math instructors and humanities for writing instructors)
    • Experience teaching undergraduate- or AP-level courses
    • Availability during weekdays
    • Ability to travel to Waynesburg, PA where the prison is located

    Training:

    PGP provides robust training and our staff supports all our volunteers as they work with system impacted people. Since its founding in 2008, the PGP has supported over 20,000 students in over 130 correctional facilities and reentry programs. We have recruited more than 8,500 volunteer tutors and instructors from 40 universities in seven states and the District of Columbia.

    Time commitment. How your time will be spent:

    1. 5 hours per week of teaching during weekdays
    • Travel to and from prisons which will vary based on your location
    • Weekly conversations with tutors and PGP staff
    • Giving student feedback outside of class time
