    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, enrichment, creative expression, career development, advocacy, and community-centered opportunity.

MAP believes that people do not need extraordinary wealth to make an extraordinary contribution.

Friends of Mentor A Promise creates an accessible way for individuals, families, professionals, community members, alumni, volunteers, and supporters to become part of sustaining MAP's mission.

About Friends of Mentor A Promise

Friends of Mentor A Promise is MAP's community of supporters who believe in the mission and want to help strengthen what is possible for young people.

The initiative is designed to transform interest in MAP into meaningful, sustained engagement.

Friends may support MAP through individual giving, peer-to-peer fundraising, recurring contributions, fundraising campaigns, community events, introductions, volunteer engagement, workplace giving, awareness-building, and other approved forms of support.

Friends of Mentor A Promise should be more than a donor list.

It should become a community around the promise.

    Role Overview

MAP is seeking a Friends of Mentor A Promise Fundraising Manager to build, coordinate, and grow the fundraising activities associated with the Friends of Mentor A Promise initiative.

This role will help create an accessible community-fundraising program that allows people at different giving levels to participate meaningfully in MAP's mission.

The Manager will develop fundraising campaigns, cultivate supporters, coordinate peer-to-peer fundraising, support recurring giving, organize community fundraising opportunities, strengthen donor engagement, and help build systems that turn first-time supporters into long-term Friends of MAP.

    The central question is:

How do we give more people a meaningful way to become part of the promise?

    Friends of MAP Fundraising Strategy

Develop and execute a practical fundraising strategy for Friends of Mentor A Promise.

    The strategy may include:

    • Individual giving
    • Monthly giving
    • Peer-to-peer fundraising
    • Birthday and celebration fundraisers
    • Giving campaigns
    • Community fundraising
    • Workplace giving
    • Employee fundraising
    • Small fundraising events
    • Digital campaigns
    • Giving challenges
    • Matching-gift opportunities
    • Ambassador-led fundraising
    • Seasonal campaigns
    • Friend-to-friend introductions

The goal is not simply to ask more people for money.

It is to create meaningful pathways for people who care about MAP to participate in sustaining the mission.

    Build the Friends Community

Help develop Friends of Mentor A Promise into a recognizable community of supporters.

    Create pathways such as:

Discover MAP → Become Interested → Join Friends → Participate → Give → Engage → Stay Connected → Deepen Support

    Work to ensure supporters understand:

    • MAP's mission
    • Who MAP serves
    • What programs MAP provides
    • Why community support matters
    • How contributions are used
    • Ways to become involved
    • What their support helps make possible

Fundraising should strengthen relationships rather than reduce people to transactions.

    Individual Giving

Support the growth of individual donations through thoughtful outreach and engagement.

    Help develop:

    • Giving appeals
    • Donor communications
    • Campaign messages
    • Giving opportunities
    • Follow-up strategies
    • Donor recognition
    • Renewal outreach
    • Reactivation efforts
    • Recurring-giving opportunities

Supporters should understand why their contribution matters without MAP exaggerating what a specific donation can accomplish.

Trust matters more than the perfect fundraising sentence.

    Recurring Giving

Help establish and grow recurring support within Friends of Mentor A Promise.

Develop strategies for encouraging supporters who are able and interested to make consistent contributions.

    Support:

    • Monthly giving
    • Recurring donor communications
    • Retention
    • Appreciation
    • Renewal
    • Upgrade opportunities
    • Re-engagement

A recurring donor should not hear from MAP only when another donation is needed.

    Peer-to-Peer Fundraising

Build opportunities for Friends to fundraise on behalf of MAP through approved campaigns.

    Examples may include:

    • Birthdays
    • Milestones
    • Community challenges
    • School or university campaigns
    • Workplace campaigns
    • Athletic events
    • Creative fundraisers
    • Social campaigns
    • Giving days
    • Personal fundraising pages

Develop resources that make participation easy, including campaign guidance, sample messaging, FAQs, fundraising expectations, and approved MAP materials.

Peer-to-peer fundraising should expand MAP's community while protecting the integrity of the organization and its mission.

    Fundraising Campaigns

Help plan and execute Friends-focused fundraising campaigns.

    Use a clear campaign framework:

    Goal → Audience → Case for Support → Fundraising Offer → Message → Channels → Launch → Engagement → Follow-Up → Results → Learning

Every campaign should have a clear purpose.

The question should not begin with:

    What should we post?

    It should begin with:

What are we trying to accomplish, who might care, and why should they participate?

    Community Fundraising

Develop opportunities for community members to organize or participate in approved fundraising activities.

Help establish appropriate guidance for supporter-led activities so Friends understand what they may organize independently and what requires MAP approval.

Community fundraising should make participation easier without creating unnecessary organizational, financial, legal, or reputational risk.

    Fundraising Events

Support appropriately scaled Friends of MAP fundraising events, whether virtual or in person.

    Activities may include:

    • Community gatherings
    • Small benefit events
    • Creative showcases
    • Fundraising challenges
    • Networking events
    • Giving celebrations
    • Volunteer-led fundraisers
    • Partner-supported events

Events should have defined objectives and should be evaluated against the resources required to produce them.

A successful event is not simply a full room.

    It should accomplish something meaningful.

    Donor Stewardship

Help create a supporter experience that continues after a contribution is received.

    Support:

    • Timely acknowledgment
    • Thank-you communications
    • Impact updates
    • Campaign follow-up
    • Recognition
    • Engagement opportunities
    • Renewal
    • Relationship development

    Use a stewardship pathway:

Gift → Acknowledgment → Appreciation → Impact Communication → Continued Engagement → Renewal → Deeper Relationship

Gratitude should never feel automated simply because the process is organized.

    Fundraising Storytelling

Partner with PromiseVoice, PromiseBrands, PromiseMeasure, and appropriate program teams to communicate why support matters.

Fundraising stories must preserve the dignity, privacy, and safety of young people and families.

MAP should never turn someone's hardship into fundraising material simply because the story could generate donations.

The people connected to our mission are people first.

    Fundraising comes second.

    Fundraising Goals & Performance

Establish practical fundraising goals and monitor progress.

    Measures may include:

    • Total funds raised
    • Number of donors
    • New donors
    • Returning donors
    • Recurring donors
    • Donor retention
    • Average contribution
    • Campaign performance
    • Peer-to-peer fundraisers
    • Fundraising participation
    • Donor engagement
    • Renewal rates

Fundraising performance should be understood in context.

A large number of first-time donors who never return tells a different story from a growing community that continues supporting MAP over time.

    Fundraising Systems

Help build reliable systems for managing Friends of Mentor A Promise.

    Support processes involving:

    • Donor records
    • Campaign tracking
    • Fundraising calendars
    • Donor segmentation
    • Acknowledgments
    • Follow-ups
    • Recurring giving
    • Fundraising pipelines
    • Campaign results
    • Stewardship activities
    • Documentation

Important donor relationships should not depend entirely on someone's memory or personal inbox.

    Financial & Gift Coordination

Work with PromiseFinance and PromiseGiving leadership to ensure donations and fundraising activities follow MAP's approved financial processes.

The Manager should not independently make representations regarding tax deductibility, charitable value, restricted gifts, financial treatment, sponsorship arrangements, or other matters requiring specialized review.

Fundraising enthusiasm should never outrun responsible stewardship.

    Cross-Divisional Collaboration

Work closely with PromiseGiving on fundraising strategy and donor stewardship.

Partner with PromiseVoice on communications and campaign messaging.

Partner with PromiseBrands on appropriate campaign creative and brand expression.

Partner with PromiseBridge where partnerships may support fundraising opportunities.

Partner with PromiseMeasure on responsible impact information.

Partner with PromisePrograms when fundraising relates to program needs or opportunities.

Partner with PromiseFinance on appropriate donation tracking and financial processes.

MAP's fundraising should feel like one organization speaking with clarity—not multiple teams independently asking the same community for support.

    Fundraising Ethics

Friends of Mentor A Promise fundraising must reflect MAP's values.

The Manager should help ensure fundraising is:

    • Truthful
    • Respectful
    • Transparent
    • Dignity-centered
    • Mission-aligned
    • Appropriate to the audience
    • Responsible with donor information
    • Clear about how funds support MAP

MAP should never manufacture urgency, exaggerate impact, exploit hardship, or pressure someone into giving.

The strongest fundraising does not manipulate generosity.

    It earns trust.

    Volunteer Fundraising Team

Help recruit, organize, and develop volunteers who can support Friends of Mentor A Promise.

    This may include:

    • Fundraising Coordinators
    • Donor Engagement Volunteers
    • Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Volunteers
    • Campaign Volunteers
    • Community Fundraising Ambassadors
    • Event Volunteers

Provide clear assignments, expectations, resources, feedback, and support.

The Manager should not become MAP's only fundraiser.

The Manager should help build a community capable of fundraising together.

    Qualifications

Strong candidates may have experience or transferable skills in:

    • Fundraising
    • Development
    • Individual giving
    • Donor relations
    • Community engagement
    • Peer-to-peer fundraising
    • Nonprofit management
    • Events
    • Marketing
    • Communications
    • Sales or relationship development
    • Customer or member engagement

    Candidates should demonstrate:

    • Strong relationship-building skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication.
    • Comfort engaging new people.
    • Strong organization and follow-through.
    • Creativity around community fundraising.
    • Ability to coordinate campaigns and projects.
    • Comfort working toward measurable goals.
    • Ability to collaborate across teams.
    • Strong judgment and professionalism.
    • Respect for donor privacy and confidentiality.
    • Commitment to ethical, dignity-centered fundraising.
    • Alignment with MAP's mission.

Previous professional fundraising experience is helpful but not required for candidates with strong transferable relationship-building, campaign, communications, or community-engagement experience.

    What Success Looks Like

Friends of Mentor A Promise develops a clear identity and purpose.

More people understand how they can support MAP.

First-time donors have meaningful pathways to remain involved.

    Recurring giving grows.

Peer-to-peer fundraising becomes easier to participate in.

    Community fundraisers have clear guidance.

Campaigns have defined goals and measurable results.

    Supporters receive thoughtful follow-up.

    Donor information is organized.

Fundraising becomes increasingly systematic rather than episodic.

The number of people who consider themselves Friends of Mentor A Promise grows.

And MAP develops a broader community invested not only in giving once—but in staying connected to the promise.

    Why This Role Matters

    Every nonprofit needs resources.

But sustainable fundraising is ultimately about something larger than money.

    It is about relationships.

    Someone discovers MAP.

They learn about a young person receiving mentorship.

They understand why the work matters.

They decide they want to help.

    Perhaps they give $10.

    Perhaps they give every month.

Perhaps they ask ten friends to join them.

Perhaps they introduce MAP to their workplace.

Perhaps years later, they are still here.

That is how a community forms.

Friends of Mentor A Promise should create a place for that relationship to begin.

    Commitment

Approximately 5–10 hours per week with a minimum six-month commitment.

The Manager will maintain consistent communication with PromiseGiving leadership, participate in relevant meetings, manage assigned fundraising initiatives, coordinate supporter engagement, and contribute to Friends of Mentor A Promise growth.

    What You'll Gain

This role offers practical management experience in nonprofit fundraising, individual giving, donor engagement, peer-to-peer fundraising, campaign strategy, community building, and development operations.

The Manager will have the opportunity to help build a fundraising initiative from the ground up, develop campaigns, engage supporters, coordinate volunteers, collaborate across MAP, and create systems that can strengthen the organization for years to come.

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • Resume or CV
    • Cover letter

This is an unpaid volunteer role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week and a minimum six-month commitment.

At this time, MAP volunteer opportunities are limited to individuals based in the United States due to legal, safeguarding, data-privacy, compliance, and programmatic requirements.

Build the community. Earn the trust. Invite people into the mission. Turn generosity into sustained support—and help every Friend of Mentor A Promise understand that keeping a promise is something we can do together.
