    Description

As a Friends Group for the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex, we coordinate volunteers to operate a small Nature Store inside the Don Edwards SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center. We have two types of volunteer positions available: Nature Store Shift Volunteer and Nature Store Coordinator.

Nature Store shift volunteers (Saturdays and Sundays): We need volunteers to process sales, keep track of merchandise, and enhance the appeal of the space. We will also train you to engage and respond to Refuge visitors, answer questions, and help orient the visitors to trails, programs, and other activities. We are seeking people with an interest in nature and wildlife, and who enjoy talking with others to help them learn to appreciate and enjoy nature and learn about wildlife and habitat preservation. Our expectation is that you will volunteer at least once a month on a regular basis (with some exceptions for your vacations and the like).

Nature Store Coordinator (work with a partner in this position): This is a long-term position helping to manage the store and volunteers in the shift positions (see above). Duties include recruiting, training, and scheduling shift volunteers, tracking the inventory, and making recommendations for new items. If you are interested in taking on a large degree of oversight for the operations of the Nature Store and Visitors Center, please respond to this posting with "help coordinate" in your response.

    Both positions:

Volunteers in these positions may go on to help in other ways over time. Some have developed their own public programs, or come up with ideas for improvements that reach visitors in different ways. You will work with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff, and be part of a group of friendly, dedicated volunteers.

We open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-2pm when available trained volunteers make that possible. If we have no volunteers, the Visitor Center/Nature Store opening will be cancelled on that day. Shifts are from 9:45am-12:05pm and 11:55am-2:10pm, and volunteers are welcome to cover both shifts in a day.
