Host home providers offer a room in their home to a local high school student who is struggling with housing instability and living on their own. This is a longer-term commitment (a few months to 1 year) investing in a youth striving to finish high school, GED, or community college, but facing personal and systemic barriers. There are no parenting expectations of the home provider. This is a landlord-tenant arrangement at the most basic level. We ask home providers to offer housing, food, and a caring adult presence. Students cannot pay cash rent, but they can help with some household responsibilities.
Second Home students are usually referred through their high school counselor. They commit to staying on track in school, remaining drug- and alcohol-free, and meeting mutually agreed upon household expectations formalized in a rental agreement. Local mediation programs provide services to build the rental agreement with both the home provider and the student as well as conflict resolution assistance if needed. Second Home staff offers host support and coaching throughout their hosting experience. When a student moves on from the program they leave with a rental history that a future landlord can reference. They may also qualify for a tuition and fee waiver for any public college or university in Oregon.
Home providers are always needed in the school districts of Washington, Clackamas, East Multnomah, and Lincoln Counties.
