Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, and community. Expanding and sustaining this work requires strong, strategic funding—and the ability to clearly communicate impact to partners and funders.

About PromiseGiving | Grants, Fundraising & Development

PromiseGiving leads MAP’s fundraising and resource development efforts, including grants, partnerships, and donor engagement. The division ensures that MAP has the financial foundation to grow programs, expand reach, and deepen impact.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Grant Writer / Development Associate to support grant research, writing, and submission efforts.

This role is responsible for translating MAP’s work into compelling proposals that secure funding from foundations, institutions, and partners. It connects program impact, data, and storytelling into clear, fundable narratives.

This is a direct revenue-driving role that supports the long-term sustainability of the organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    Grant Research & Pipeline Development

    • Identify and research grant opportunities aligned with MAP’s mission and programs
    • Maintain a pipeline of prospective funders and deadlines
    • Track application timelines and requirements

    Grant Writing & Submission

    • Draft, edit, and submit grant proposals, letters of inquiry (LOIs), and applications
    • Tailor proposals to align with funder priorities and guidelines
    • Ensure clarity, accuracy, and compelling storytelling

    Impact Integration & Data Alignment

    • Collaborate with PromiseMeasure to integrate data, outcomes, and metrics into proposals
    • Work with Program Team to accurately represent program design and impact
    • Ensure proposals reflect both qualitative and quantitative impact

    Reporting & Grant Management Support

    • Assist in preparing grant reports and updates for funders
    • Track grant deliverables and reporting deadlines
    • Maintain organized records of submissions and outcomes

    Cross-Team Collaboration

    • Work closely with Finance (PromiseFinance) to align budgets and financial narratives
    • Collaborate with Leadership on funding strategy and priorities
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills
    • Ability to translate programs and data into compelling narratives
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to manage deadlines and multiple submissions
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred

    • Experience in grant writing, fundraising, or nonprofit development
    • Familiarity with foundation funding and grant processes
    • Experience working with program data or impact reporting
    • Background in nonprofit, education, or social impact work

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • Hands-on experience in grant writing and nonprofit development
    • Exposure to funding strategy and institutional partnerships
    • Collaboration with leadership, program, and data teams
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • A direct role in securing resources that sustain and expand impact

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • Resume (required)
    • Cover letter (required) describing relevant writing or fundraising experience and interest in MAP’s mission
    • Optional: Writing sample (grant, proposal, or similar)
