    Description

Director of Volunteer Experience and Leadership Development @ Statistics Without Borders

Mission: Why does the role exist?

This role exists to make Statistics Without Borders a consistently exceptional place for volunteers to contribute their time and energy. As part of this work, this role is responsible for developing volunteer experience and leadership development at SWB, including volunteer satisfaction, retention and professional growth.

This role sits on the SWB Executive Committee and will contribute meaningfully to strategic SWB work across the organisation.

Outcomes: What 4-6 things will the role need to achieve over the next 2 years that will define its legacy?

    • SWB has the systems in place that allow us to understand the current health of the volunteer experience, including areas that are working well and areas that need improvement.
    • The SWB volunteer recognition program expands to include timely, consistent, and valuable external recognition (e.g., via verifiable certification), as well as internal constructive feedback to volunteers who participate on client projects.
    • Volunteers stay with SWB for longer, and leadership development becomes a core competency of SWB. Volunteers who wish to do so are able to learn, develop and, where appropriate, take on leadership roles within SWB.
    • Volunteers have clear expectations regarding the competitive nature of SWB project participation and the value of project participation to their reputations, as well as other opportunities that SWB offers for volunteers to participate, enhance their skills and grow their networks.
    • The process for volunteer onboarding sets volunteers up to succeed, e.g. via participation in sample projects.

Competencies: What role-specific skills and experiences are needed to be successful?

    Strongly desired:

    - Previous experience overseeing recruitment, professional development and retention in the volunteer or workforce context.

    - Previous experience building and executing new strategies, including working cross-functionally and managing change across teams and various audiences.

    - Comfort experimenting with new processes, and a thoughtful, pragmatic approach to balancing need for process with the constraints of an all-volunteer organization.

    Desired:

    - Experience working with volunteers / not-for-profit organizations and / or leading teams across time zones.
