    Description

As a Disaster Action Team (DAT) Specialist, you will provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are local, personal disasters like home fires. Disaster Action Team (DAT) Specialists respond to local disasters and provide immediate compassion and care to clients.

You will need to become/be an authorized driver. The largest vehicle used in this position is a 7-passenger van.

    Your Responsibilities in this Role:

    • Provide care, comfort, and compassion to clients (in accordance with Red Cross standards and procedures).
    • Work as a part of an assigned team to respond to local disasters and work with on-scene DAT SV/MN to assess whether additional resources/support are required and communicate those needs to DAT Leadership.
    • Complete second-responder confirmations in RC Care, the client case-management system.
    • Exercise flexibility in a continuously changing environment in which work priorities may change frequently.
    • Efficiently handle time-sensitive issues that may arise in the area of responsibility.
    • Work independently while following the direction of the direct supervisor.
    • Time Commitment: A 1-year commitment is necessary due to training and mentorship requirements.
    • Complete all online training within 3 months of starting the position.
    • MUST COMPLETE three 8-hour shifts per month.
    • As a volunteer, you will come into the NYC Chapter HQ for your shift and be dispatched from there.

    Shift Times:

You will join a Disaster Action Team responding from our New York City chapter headquarters for an 8-hour shift. The standard shift times are:

    • 6am-2pm
    • 2pm-10pm
