Description:
This opportunity is for a volunteer to lead a bi‑weekly knitting class for senior residents who have expressed interest in creative activities. The volunteer will teach basic knitting skills and guide residents in creating items such as scarves and hats while fostering a welcoming and social environment. Sessions are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. English is required, and the ability to speak Chinese is preferred but not required.
Reports to:
Volunteer Coordinator and the site’s Service Coordinator
Goal of Position:
To provide senior residents with a creative outlet through knitting while supporting mental stimulation, fine motor skills, and social connection.
Specific Tasks:
- Prepare knitting activities and projects for each session.
- Set up the community room for the knitting group.
- Provide clear instructions and guidance on knitting techniques.
- Support residents one-on-one as needed while encouraging independence.
- Monitor yarn usage to ensure supplies are shared appropriately.
- Ensure all participating residents sign the sign-in sheet.
- Encourage resident feedback and participation.
- Clean up after each session and return the space to its original setup.
- Communicate supply needs to the Service Coordinator or Volunteer Coordinator.
Qualifications:
Physical/Age Requirements:
- Able to stand and move around the room during sessions.
- Able to carry and manage knitting and craft supplies.
Skills/Education/Experience:
- Experience with knitting and basic knitting techniques.
- Ability to explain knitting instructions clearly and simply.
- Friendly, patient, and open‑minded.
- Prior experience teaching, training, or assisting others is preferred.
- Ability to speak Chinese is helpful but not required.
