    Description

    BEFORE YOU APPLY:

    • USA Residents Only: At this time we are only accepting applicants located in the United States. While we have every intention of expanding volunteering internationally, as we are very new and launching first in the US, we are just starting with candidates in the US for now.

    Who We Are

Unruled Masses is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public-interest intelligence organization focused on exposing corruption, abuse of power, and systemic exploitation—while helping communities peacefully reclaim agency, accountability, and civic life.

We combine rigorous intelligence tradecraft with public-facing analysis and real-world civic action. Our mission goes beyond exposure: we aim to help people reconnect and act together. To do this, we must amplify our findings and ensure our message reaches the public accurately, safely, and with maximum impact. We need to build a strategic, resilient, and proactive media relations program that cuts through the noise and establishes Unruled Masses as a trusted, authoritative voice in public-interest intelligence.

    Who You Are

You are a media relations professional, publicist, or communications strategist who understands that a well-placed story is a powerful tool for justice. You are motivated by truth and believe that an anti-corruption civic intelligence organization deserves a world-class press strategy. You know how to translate complex investigations into compelling human stories, and you possess the grit and diplomatic savvy required to pitch high-stakes narratives to journalists.

You may be an experienced PR veteran looking to apply your skills to a higher purpose, a corporate communications or marketing specialist seeking a meaningful outlet for advocacy, a talented PR or marketing student eager to build a foundational media program from the ground up. You are disciplined, understand media ethics and confidentiality, and possess a knack for building lasting relationships with journalists. Most importantly, you know how to navigate fast-moving news cycles while fiercely protecting the integrity of our organization and our sources.

    What You’ll Do

As a Press Relations Manager, you will:

    • Build the PR Program: Design, implement, and maintain a comprehensive media relations strategy tailored to a remote, high-stakes nonprofit environment.
    • Draft & Distribute Press Materials: Write compelling press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and pitch letters that translate complex investigative findings into clear, impactful news stories.
    • Media Outreach & Relations: Build and maintain a targeted database of journalists, editors, producers, and independent creators across mainstream, investigative, and alternative media.
    • Secure Coverage: Actively pitch stories, investigative reports, and organization milestones to secure high-quality print, digital, broadcast, and podcast coverage for Unruled Masses.
    • Coordinate Interviews & Briefings: Create and manage opportunities for media interviews, brief spokespeople, and prepare talking points to ensure consistent, secure messaging.

    Exceptional volunteers may:

    • Serve as the Lead Communications Strategist for major global campaigns or rapid-response investigative drops.
    • Develop comprehensive media training modules and crisis communications protocols for organizational spokespeople.
    • Architect long-term public relations and brand positioning strategies as the nonprofit grows.
    • Mentor and lead junior PR volunteers, copywriters, or media monitoring coordinators.

    PR Areas of Interest

We are especially interested in PR professionals who understand the unique media dynamics and risks associated with: Investigative Journalism; Anti-Corruption and Legal Reporting; Crisis Communications & Reputation Management; High-Security & Confidential Environments; Digital/Alternative Media Ecosystems; and Protecting Vulnerable Sources/Whistleblowers in the Public Eye.

    Ideal Qualifications

    • Proven PR Expertise: Experience in public relations, media relations, or communications, with a strong grasp of how newsrooms operate and what journalists look for in a story.
    • Program & Campaign Creation: A track record of building media lists, drafting press materials, and executing successful media pitches or PR campaigns from scratch.
    • Exceptional Writing & Communication: Superior storytelling and editing skills, with the ability to distill dense intelligence or legal data into clear, punchy, and objective copy.
    • Media Navigation Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to pitch to journalists, follow up persistently, and coordinate fast-turnaround interview requests.
    • Mission Alignment & Discretion: A demonstrated interest in social justice and accountability, paired with an absolute commitment to organizational security and strict information barriers.
    • Reliability: Comfortable working independently and remotely in a fluid, dynamic, and fast-paced media environment.

    Compensation & Commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role. We are flexible on time, but ask for at least 2-5 hours a week to support our ongoing media outreach, pitching cycles, and press release drafting. As funding allows, paid positions or project-based contracts may be offered in the future.

Benefits of Volunteering with Unruled Masses

    • Strategic Leadership Experience: See your PR strategies and media campaigns directly shape the public profile and impact of a global intelligence organization.
    • Founding Team Status: Be one of the original operational voices establishing the media foundation and public narrative of a new kind of nonprofit.
    • Professional Growth: Apply your communications expertise to a highly unique, cutting-edge environment, collaborating with investigative journalists, analysts, and activists.
