    Description

    Heartland Hospice offers volunteer opportunites for caring individuals who wish to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. Here are some ways you can serve as a Veteran to Veteran Volunteer:

    1. Companionship: Spending time with patients by offering a smile, holding their hand, sharing stories, listening, reading, or singing.
    2. Caregiver Respite: Offering scheduled breaks for cargivers, allowing them to rest, manage personal tasks, or simply recharge.
    3. Veteran to Veteran Support: If you are a Veteran, you can support fellow service members during their end of life journey.

    As a Veteran to Veteran Volunteer, you will be fiven choices as to how many and what types of activities you want to do. Volunteers have flexibility; the opportunities may be once monthly to once weekly depending on your availability.

    Our patients resid ein private homes, local nursing facilities and assisted living facilities. Some examples of typical volunteer duties are:

    • Listening to a patient's concerns
    • Being a comforting and supportive presence
    • Engaging in the patient's hobbies
    • Writing down memories for the paitent or helping with correspondence
    • Running errands or doing light housekeeping for those receiving hospice care at home
    • Providing time for the caregiver to take care of her/himself

    Our volunteers are "hands off" and no medical training is required; all you need is a compassionate heart! To ensure our volunteers feel comfortable with their tasks, Heartland Hospice will provide training that covers grief counseling, emotional support, and end of life care.
