Description
About Outcome School
Outcome School is a free tech school offering structured, level-based programs in software engineering, AI, product, robotics, game development, and cybersecurity — built for underserved youth and minorities who lack affordable, practical pathways into tech careers. Each program level runs for 12 weeks, combining training, mentorship, and real hiring pathways to bridge the gap between education and employment.
The Opportunity
Outcome School relies on volunteer subject-matter experts — many without prior teaching experience — to run workshops independently. Right now, we're building the knowledge base and training materials that make that possible. As Instructional Designer, you'll lead this work directly, partnering closely with our learning experience product manager on strategy and research.
This role is ideal for PhD or Master's students in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Experience Design, or Educational Technology, or for education professionals with a desire to pivot into the EdTech and online learning field.
What You'll Do
- Build, structure, and maintain Outcome School's content library on GitBook — including instructor guidebooks, training materials, and onboarding resources for volunteer facilitators
- Translate complex program knowledge into clear, self-service documentation that non-specialist volunteers can follow independently
- Write learner-facing and instructor-facing educational content — course materials, training guides, how-to articles — in a clear, consistent voice
- Apply instructional design principles (learning objectives, scaffolding, age-appropriate framing) to make materials usable and effective
- Design and build slide decks in Google Slides for workshops, stakeholder updates, training sessions, and outreach
What We're Looking For
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Experience Design, Educational Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Understanding of adult learning theories and instructional design models (Bloom's Taxonomy, ADDIE, etc.)
- Ability to translate complex, dense topics into clear, digestible, and visually engaging training materials
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Prior teaching experience
- Experience designing online courses and learning materials
- Familiarity with tools like GitBook, Articulate Storyline, Rise, Captivate, Figma, or Canva
Time Commitment
Flexible and remote-friendly, 3–6 hours per week. Ideal for graduate students or professionals seeking applied instructional design experience, portfolio projects, or community impact work.
What You'll Gain
- Real-world instructional design experience
- Portfolio-ready artifacts (learning materials, curriculum maps, presentations, guidebooks)
- Experience collaborating with designers, engineers, and educators
- Leadership opportunities in shaping a growing educational organization
- Meaningful impact on youth learning and community development
