    Description

Volunteer Opportunity: Conservation & Restoration Workshop (CRW) - Northwest Railway Museum

Help restore and preserve historic railroad equipment at the Northwest Railway Museum!

Are you interested in hands-on projects, learning practical skills, or connecting with Washington State and railroad history? Volunteers in our Conservation & Restoration Workshop (CRW) work directly with historic railcars and locomotives, helping ensure these artifacts are preserved for future generations.

    CRW volunteers may assist with:

    • Woodworking and carpentry
    • Painting and finishing
    • Metal work and light welding
    • Mechanical work and maintenance on historic diesel-electric locomotives
    • General restoration and conservation tasks

No prior experience is required — many volunteers learn new skills on the job while working alongside experienced staff and fellow volunteers.

    About the CRW

Opened in 2006, the Conservation & Restoration Workshop is an 8,400-square-foot indoor facility featuring two full-length rail tracks, climate control, restrooms, and a visitor viewing gallery. The space is dedicated to the restoration and care of the Museum’s large historic artifacts.

    Volunteer Requirements

    • Must be 16 years of age or older
    • Willingness to follow safety procedures and staff direction
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

    Schedule

Volunteer schedules vary based on project needs and staff availability.

If you enjoy working with your hands, learning new skills, or contributing to meaningful preservation work, we’d love to have you join the team.
