    Description

Full-time Garden Position in Biodynamic Vegetable CSA

Sankanac Community Supported Agriculture, ("CSA") is a 150-member vegetable garden where community members buy shares in the farm. We are seeking full time gardeners for the coming growing season beginning in Spring 2022. We grow a diverse mix of vegetables, flowers, herbs, and berries on 15 acres of farmland.

    Activities in the CSA include:

    • plant propagation
    • greenhouse management
    • pruning
    • crop cultivation
    • harvesting and post-harvest handling
    • irrigation
    • composting
    • making and applying the biodynamic preparations

Sankanac CSA is embedded within Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, a 432-acre agricultural and crafts community that includes adults with developmental disabilities. Village-wide, we are deeply committed to the use of biodynamic methods which allow us to strengthen our ecosystem as well as to provide food of the highest quality to our local community.

Full-time gardeners receive ongoing hands-on experience throughout the cycle of the year. In addition, there are some opportunities for farm visits, working with biodynamic preparations, and some theoretical study and conference opportunities during the off season.

Agricultural experience is helpful but not necessary for these positions; gardeners should be mobile on their feet, able to lift 40 pounds, and able to persevere through a variety of weather conditions (heat and humidity, rain, cold). The ability to work in groups and to communicate well is also very important.

All gardeners will have their own room in a shared village house alongside people of varying abilities; they also have at least one half-day scheduled to help in their household each week. Members of the community, including our CSA gardeners, are full-time volunteers who receive support from the community to cover their living expenses.

    Applicant requirements:

    • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
    • A valid driver’s License is helpful but not required
    • Applicants must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and to be able to perform well in environment that requires compassion, helpfulness, patience, and resourcefulness.
    • Must be able to pass a background check
    • We ask for a one-year commitment - with the opportunity to stay on if it's a good match!

    Compensation:

    • Private room in one of our lifesharing houses
    • Room and board (including utilities and wifi) are included
    • A Monthly living allowance of $200
    • Assistance with medical expenses (after one’s first 3 months in the community)
    • Assistance with student loan debt is available for those with debt
    • Access to village vehicles (gas and insurance is provided)
    • Educational opportunities including conferences and workshops
    • Three weeks of vacation per year
