    Position description

The Media Relations Coordinator helps increase the visibility of Women in Science PDX by sharing our events, programs, volunteer opportunities, and organizational initiatives with local media outlets, podcasts, newsletters, community calendars, and other communications partners. Working with the Communications Chair, you'll identify promotional opportunities, use AI tools to draft outreach materials, and build relationships that help amplify WIS PDX's message. This role is ideal for someone interested in media relations, public relations, science communication, and nonprofit communications.

    Key Position Responsibilities

    • Research local media outlets, podcasts, newsletters, community calendars, and other promotional opportunities.
    • Use AI tools to draft outreach emails, media pitches, and promotional materials, refining them to match the WIS PDX brand voice.
    • Submit organizational announcements, events, and volunteer opportunities to appropriate publications, calendars, and media contacts.
    • Develop and maintain a database of media contacts, publications, podcasts, and promotional partners.
    • Collaborate with fellow Communications team members to identify initiatives that may benefit from external promotion.
    • Track outreach efforts and recommend new opportunities to expand WIS PDX's visibility.
    • Attend monthly Communications Committee meetings.

    Ideal Experience

We're looking for someone who enjoys building relationships and sharing stories with new audiences. Helpful experience includes:

    • Strong written communication skills
    • Interest in public relations, communications, journalism, or marketing
    • Research and organizational skills
    • Interest in science communication or nonprofit outreach

Professional media relations experience is not required. We'll provide guidance, templates, and mentorship to help you develop effective outreach skills.

    What You'll Gain

As the Media Relations Coordinator, you'll have the opportunity to:

    • Gain hands-on experience with nonprofit public relations and media outreach.
    • Learn how organizations build relationships with journalists, podcasters, and media organizations.
    • Develop skills in AI-assisted communications, media pitching, and relationship building.
    • Build experience promoting science communication initiatives and community events.
    • Help increase the visibility and impact of Women in Science PDX by expanding awareness of our programs, events, and initiatives.
