About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a NYC-based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression. Accessibility is not an afterthought at MAP — it is a priority in making sure all children and youth are able to access vital resources.

MAP’s visual identity, educational materials, books, media, and spaces all rely on accessibility through their design.

Role Overview

The Digital Content Accessibility Coordinator will perform outreach to different departments of Mentor A Promise. They will work directly with the Physical Accessibility Coordinator and Sensory Accessibility Coordinator. The Digital Content Accessibility Coordinator will begin by assessing Mentor A Promise’s digital content across departments. They will provide a summary of the accessibility of a department’s resources to the team lead. The team lead will then speak to the team lead of each respective department, explaining things they do well in terms of digital accessibility, as well as highlighting areas of improvement. Thorough department audits will be completed every two weeks, and all positions in Accessible Design should focus on one department at a time, creating a report together with sections on digital, physical, and sensory accessibility together so that a holistic report can be given to respective department leaders. Check-ins on audit progress will take place during weekly meetings with the whole disability justice team.

Key Responsibilities

• Assesses the accessibility of Mentor A Promise Materials on social media platforms and email (screenreader accessibility, color contrast accessibility, the presence of alt text and image descriptions, font size, font usage, numbered and bulleted lists, etc.)
• Creates summaries of digital accessibility for respective departments that is sent to team lead, who then contacts the department with summaries.
• Teach a member of each department designated by that department how to make content more accessible (this could be informing about alt text, providing good online tools etc.)
• Act as a digital accessibility resource for Mentor A Promise volunteers who seek assistance
• Uphold Universal Design Principles and standards to best of ability

Qualifications

• Strong commitment to accessibility and disability justice
• Familiarity with technology and digital accessibility tools
• Synthesize accessibility guidance in approachable manner
• Reliability, creativity, and comfort working in a collaborative nonprofit environment
• Alignment with MAP’s mission and commitment to dignity-centered work

Preferred Skills

• Experience advocating for disabled individuals, or lived experience as a disabled person
• Familiarity with JAWS, WCAG standards, alt text, image descriptions and color contrast checkers
• Familiarity with Universal Design
• Experience working with writers or creative teams

Commitment

• Volunteer role
• Approximately 5–10 hours per week
• Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
• Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
