Every 8 minutes the American Red Cross responds to a disaster. Our Disaster Action Team (DAT) provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, such as home fires. We are looking for compassionate people to respond as soon as possible when the dispatch call comes in.
DAT responders will:
- Go to the scene of a disaster to meet with and participate in the interview of those affected ("clients")
- Help clients feel that the Red Cross cares and can help them begin their recovery
- Provide access to resources for necessities (like lost medications, shelter, food, mental health and spiritual care support, and/or financial assistance, when eligible)
Experiences you may be exposed to:
- Fire department activity
- Noise, water, smoke, smell, ash, etc.
- Possibly distraught clients
- Injured or hospitalized people or pets
We encourage volunteers to sign up for at least 2 on-call shifts a month. On-call shifts are 6 hours in length. You may or may not be called to respond during that time.
Please reach out if you have any questions about this rewarding volunteer opportunity!
