    About the Opportunity

Are you looking to align your career with your ethics? Are you ready to step outside of the traditional professional routine and make a tangible, life-saving difference?

The Vervet Monkey Foundation (VMF) is inviting passionate, purpose-driven changemakers to join our team in the heart of South Africa. As an internationally recognized, GFAS-accredited primate sanctuary, we provide a lifelong safe haven for over 600 orphaned, injured, and abused vervet monkeys.

Our ultimate mission is rehabilitation and wild reintroduction. But we cannot build these wild families alone. We need proactive global citizens who want to gain incredible hard skills, foster international community, and directly contribute to global wildlife preservation.

Whether you are a student looking for field experience, a professional on a sabbatical, or a conscious traveler seeking true purpose, your hands and heart are wanted here.

What You Will Do (Your Impact)

Volunteering at the VMF is a fully immersive, dynamic experience. Depending on your interests and length of stay, you will contribute to:

    • Primate Rehabilitation & Care: Assist in the daily care of our rescued residents, from preparing specialized nutritional diets to bottle-feeding orphaned infants in our high-energy nursery season.
    • Foster Team Introductions: Monitor and collect ethological (behavioral) data as we introduce orphaned babies to compassionate foster mothers—a critical step toward wild integration.
    • Habitat & Enclosure Innovation: Work with our construction team to build and maintain massive, natural forest enclosures that allow our monkeys to live in real, functioning wild troops.
    • Sanctuary Operations & Advocacy: Lend your unique skills to our sustainable operations, including eco-gardening, vegan cooking for the volunteer community, global fundraising initiatives, or social media advocacy.

What You Will Gain (The Career & Personal Value)

We believe volunteering should be mutually transformative. By investing your time in our sanctuary, you will develop a standout portfolio of skills:

    • Elite Leadership & Adaptability: Learn to lead and collaborate within a high-functioning, multicultural international community under dynamic, fast-paced field conditions.
    • Hands-on Animal Husbandry: Gain practical, real-world knowledge of primate behavior, veterinary care protocols, and wildlife sanctuary management.
    • Global Competency: Build a deep network of like-minded conservationists, activists, and friends from all corners of the globe.
    • Ethical Alignment: Experience the profound fulfillment of knowing that your daily labor directly prevents suffering and restores wild freedom to an indigenous species.

    Who We Are Looking For

No prior experience in zoology or veterinary science is required! We value attitude, grit, and heart above all else. Our ideal volunteer is:

    • Resilient & Hardworking: Ready to roll up their sleeves and work outdoors in the South African sun.
    • Compassionate & Respectful: Deeply committed to animal welfare, non-violence, and working in a collaborative, plant-based environment.
    • Open-minded & Adaptable: Excited to live communally with international volunteers and embrace the unpredictability of wildlife rescue.

    Logistics & Contributions

    • Duration: Flexible placements starting from a minimum of 2 weeks up to 6 months or longer.
    • What’s Included: On-site accommodation in our volunteer village, three wholesome vegan meals per day, full training, and 24/7 staff support.
    • Program Contribution: As a non-profit operating entirely on donations, volunteers contribute a program fee starting at £550 (approx. $750 USD) for 2 weeks. This directly covers your living costs and funds the milk formula, food, and medical supplies for the monkeys.
