Position Overview

GoodBot is seeking a volunteer Board Member with deep expertise in artificial intelligence to serve as the organization's AI Subject Matter Expert. This individual will help guide GoodBot's strategic direction, strengthen our credibility with policymakers and funders, and ensure our programmatic work reflects the current technical and regulatory landscape.

This role is both a governance seat and a specialized advisory function: the AI SME will serve as a key thought partner to staff and fellow board members on AI governance issues, while fulfilling standard board fiduciary and governance responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Governance & Fiduciary Duties

• Attend and actively participate in quarterly board meetings and relevant committee meetings
• Uphold duties of care consistent with nonprofit board service
• Support fundraising efforts, including leveraging personal and professional networks where appropriate

Digital & AI Policy Expertise

• Advise staff and fellow board members on emerging AI legislation, regulatory frameworks, and international governance trends
• Help shape GoodBot's policy positions, public comments, and advocacy priorities related to AI
• Review and provide substantive input on reports, testimony, research, or public-facing materials that touch on AI policy
• Serve as a go-to resource for staff when technical questions arise during project execution

Strategic Contribution

• Help the board and staff anticipate how technical and regulatory shifts in AI may affect organizational strategy over the next 1–3 years
• Support connections to relevant networks (eg. academic, technical, legal, civil society, or industry) to strengthen GoodBot's policy work and expand its reach
• Represent GoodBot, as needed, at conferences, coalition meetings, or with media and policymakers on AI-related topics

Digital Literacy & Program Support

• Provide input on GoodBot's digital literacy curricula to ensure AI-related content is technically accurate and pedagogically sound
• Help identify gaps in public understanding of AI that GoodBot's programs could address

Qualifications

Essential

• Demonstrated expertise in AI policy, technology governance, or a closely related field (e.g., through work in government, academia, civil society, law, or industry)
• Familiarity with the current AI regulatory landscape and key debates including safety, bias and fairness, transparency, labor impacts, national security, and intellectual property
• Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences (policymakers, community organizers, educators)
• Commitment to GoodBot's mission of inclusive technology futures and proactive digital policy

Preferred

• Prior board or advisory experience (nonprofit, cooperative, or industry)
• Published work, public commentary, or recognized contributions to AI policy discourse
• Experience engaging with international governance bodies (UN, OECD, GPAI, EU Commission) or domestic regulatory processes
• Connections to academic research communities, civil society coalitions, or developer ecosystems working on AI governance

Time Commitment

As a Board Member, you will be expected to:

• Attend all quarterly Board of Directors meetings (typically 2 hours each)
• Review and provide substantive input on reports, testimony, research, or public-facing materials that touch on AI policy
• Give guidance to staff during the research process
• Occasional ad-hoc tasks as needed
