    Description

    McLaren Hospice Patient Support Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to provide compassionate care and support to terminally ill patients and their families. Hospice volunteers offer emotional, social, and practical assistance, helping enhance the quality of life for their patients in the final stages of their life. Volunteering with McLaren is ideal for someone with a caring heart, good listening skills, and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Here are some of the potential volunteer opportunities that you may be interested in.

    • Companionship Visits: Volunteers make a visit to either a patient's home or a facility to provide emotional and social support to patients by being a friendly face and comforting presence for conversation.
    • Caregiver Relief / Respite: Volunteers provide visits to patient's homes and stay with the patient while their caregiver runs errands, goes to an appointment, or takes a much needed nap. This allows the caregiver the focus on themselves while knowing that someone is keeping an eye on their loved one.
    • Pet Therapy: Volunteers and their certified pet therapy animals provide similar services as companionship visits to patients in facilities who particularly enjoy the company of animals.
    • Veteran to Veteran Support: Volunteers who have served in the military provide companionship support to our patients who are also military veterans.
    • Sewing: Volunteers that sew, knit, and crochet are always welcome to volunteer with McLaren. McLaren Hospice provides a variety of handmade pillows, blankets, and teddy bears to our patients and their families.
    • Pet Peace of Mind: McLaren works with Pet Peace of Mind, a nationwide program to help keep hospice patients and their pets together for as long as possible through the use of volunteers. Volunteers may help transport pets to and from the groomers or vet,
    • Many other opportunities too!

    Requirements:

    • Show a great deal of empathy
    • Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
    • Be 18 years or older.
    • Complete our volunteer onboarding/training.
    • Pass a background and reference check.
    • CPR certification is NOT required.

    Service Area:

While McLaren Bay Hospice's office is located in Bay City, MI, we cover a wide service area across Mid Michigan. Volunteers are no expected to travel the entire distance of our service area and may see patients in their surrounding areas if they choose.
