Volunteer Facilitator – Descendants Talking Circle
Details
Description
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Facilitator to help lead our monthly Descendants Talking Circle: a sacred and affirming space for American Descendants of Slavery to share, reflect, and engage in dialogue around current and historical issues impacting their community.
This is a meaningful opportunity to support collective healing, honor ancestral resilience, and guide participants through intentional conversation and reflection.
What You’ll Do:
- Facilitate a 1-hour Talking Circle once per month (via Google Meet).
- Prepare for the circle using our provided template (arrival, grounding ritual, ancestral reflection, dialogue, and closing affirmation).
- Hold space with sensitivity, truth-telling, and cultural awareness.
- Complete a time card each week in which work is done (including prep, meetings, and follow-up).
- Respond to communications within 48 hours, per our organization’s leadership response clause.
- Help with marketing and outreach
Preferred Background:
- Experience in mental health, counseling, social work, group facilitation, or related fields.
- Familiarity with racial trauma, generational healing, and the historical legacy of enslavement in the U.S.
- Ability to create a respectful, inclusive, and grounded environment.
- Commitment to consistency and timely communication.
Program Overview:
The Descendants Talking Circle is a monthly virtual gathering that blends ceremonial grounding, ancestral reflection, and guided discussion on themes such as:
- Grief Processing
- Identity
- Healing Generational Wounds
- Faith and Religion
- Mental Wellness
- Sexuality
- Child/Parent Healing Relations
Our circles are designed to be sacred, affirming, truth-telling, and action-oriented; honoring our past, living fully in the present, and building our future.
Why Join Us:
This role allows you to support a growing community of Descendants who are reconnecting with their history and one another. You will play a key part in guiding dialogue, fostering healing, and helping shape the future of this program.
Note: This is a volunteer role. If funding becomes available, we hope to transition this into a stipend-supported position.
