    Description

    About the Role

The World Disaster Center (WDC) is building a next-generation global disaster intelligence system.

We are launching a satellite-enabled program to strengthen disaster prediction, monitoring, and response globally.

We are seeking a Space Systems Lead / Director to design, fund, and execute this initiative — from concept to operational deployment.

This is a builder role requiring both technical credibility and the ability to raise and mobilize resources.

    Core Responsibilities

    • Define the satellite program strategy and architecture
    • Design the technical concept (data sources, payloads, partnerships)
    • Identify build vs. partner pathways (efficient, non-redundant approach)
    • Lead fundraising efforts (grants, institutions, space programs, donors)
    • Write and submit large-scale proposals ($500K–$10M+)
    • Build partnerships with:
      • Space agencies
      • Satellite companies
      • Research and innovation institutions
    • Oversee program implementation and deployment
    • Translate satellite data into actionable disaster intelligence
    • Build and lead a specialized team over time

    Expected Deliverables

    • Satellite program concept note (within first weeks)
    • Clear funding pipeline and engagement strategy
    • Submission of 2–5 major funding proposals
    • Partnership pipeline (space, data, institutional)
    • Phased execution roadmap (technical + financial)
    • Initial operational pilot

    Required Profile

    • 5–15+ years of experience in:
      • Space / satellite / Earth observation / geospatial systems
      • OR climate-tech / advanced systems with space exposure
    • Proven experience raising funds (grants, programs, institutional funding)
    • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives
    • Experience with international programs (e.g., ESA, NASA, EU frameworks)
    • Strong network across space, climate, or innovation ecosystems
    • Ability to operate at both strategic and execution levels

    Preferred Background

    • Aerospace engineering / remote sensing / geospatial / systems engineering
    • Climate, disaster risk, or environmental intelligence systems
    • Experience working with governments, donors, and private sector actors
    • Familiarity with satellite data platforms and/or mission development

    Core Skills

    • Systems thinking (end-to-end program design)
    • High-level proposal writing and fundraising
    • Strategic partnerships and stakeholder management
    • Technical fluency (credible with engineers and scientists)
    • Speed, ownership, and execution focus

    What This Role Is NOT

    • Not a purely technical engineering role
    • Not academic or theoretical research
    • Not strategy-only without execution
    • Not suitable for entry-level candidates

    Engagement Model

    • Start as fractional lead (consultant basis)
    • Transition to Program Director upon funding

    Compensation

Performance-based and aligned with funding secured and program development stage. Structured growth into a senior leadership role.

    One-Line Role Definition

Builds, funds, and executes WDC’s space-based disaster intelligence capability.
