    Description

    We need flexible and adaptable volunteers to lead engaging classes for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Volunteers may facilitate discussions, develop educational materials, and create interactive activities in areas such as:

    • Computer Lab: Typing, data entry, word processing basics, spreadsheets, internet navigation, email setup (3D printing experience a plus).
    • Arts & Crafts: More info in the “Art Instructor” Category
    • Linguistics: Sign language, reading, and writing skills.
    • Aquatics and Fitness: Low-impact exercises such as yoga, tai chi, chair exercises (additional training for aquatics required).
    • Self-Advocacy: Communication skills, rights education, self-care, and informed decision-making.
    • Journalism: Assist students in writing articles for Sophie’s Gazette.
    • Nutrition: Healthy eating and balanced diet education.

    Program Hours:

    Monday-Friday 8:30-2 PM

    Class times are 9:30 – 10:30 AM and 12:30 – 1:30 PM

    Volunteer Requirements:

    • Can provide 30 hours of service in 3 months or 1 year of service
    • Volunteer application and Interview
    • Physical, tuberculosis screening and drug/alcohol screening (Provided by SMSC)
    • Fingerprinting (Provided by SMSC)
    • Proof of citizenship or immigration status
    • If you are under 18 years of age, you must provide consent from a legal guardian
    • 2-3 hour orientation training
    • Acknowledgement of receipt of SMSC Volunteer Handbook
