Since 2023, OGT’s School Health Agency, Resources, and Education (SHARE) Program has equipped teachers in Kenya with practical health skills and knowledge, preparing them to serve as School Health Officers (SHOs). The program’s curriculum is guided by OGT’s proprietary School Health Officer Handbook, covering key health areas such as clinical assessments (height, weight, mid-upper arm circumference [MUAC], growth curves), health care (rehydration, menstrual pain, wound and burn care), and preventive health education (nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, oral health). To date, SHARE has provided training to 172 schools across 4 counties of Kenya, serving 66,000 students, 3,235 school staff, and reaching an estimated 251,000 people in surrounding communities. In the coming year, OGT is poised to expand the proven SHARE model beyond Kenya, bringing health literacy tools to teachers and schools around the globe. To support this global scaling phase, OGT seeks additional research support to ensure every new pilot is adapted to local health challenges, policy mandates, socio-cultural context, and resource accessibility.

POSITION OVERVIEW

This internship will provide the Global Health Research Intern (the “Intern”) with an educational experience in global health program development. The Intern will gain hands-on experience conducting background research, literature reviews, and compiling reports to inform OGT’s expansion of SHARE in new resource-limited settings. This position is unpaid and intended to be a learning opportunity; however, we are happy to work with students to fulfill academic credit requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Intern agrees to perform the following tasks under the supervision of OGT staff:

• Conduct literature reviews to advance OGT’s understanding of local context and customs, common illnesses, mortality rates, and resources in new global settings.
• Compile literature review reports with critical analysis and visualizations to summarize practical findings.
• Manage, organize, and update OGT’s Global Health Information Library in Google Drive with pertinent global health guidelines and documents.
• Manage and organize project-wide trackers, maintaining clear documentation of upcoming deadlines.
• Generate weekly news reports on public health headlines for countries where OGT has active programs.
• Create 1-pagers and infographics with news updates, health alerts, and revised health mandates to inform School Health Officers and community members.

The Intern will report to a designated programming staff member. Regular check-ins and mentorship will be provided throughout the internship.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Ideal Candidate…

• Is currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in a related field (global or public health, health education, anthropology, international development)
  • Note: Other academic programs will be considered; all student applicants welcome.
• Demonstrates their ability to conduct research and compile findings into clear written reports
• Is self motivated, driven, creative, and motivated to learn
• Is flexible and willing to collaborate remotely
• Has access to their own laptop/computer
• Is available for 5 hours weekly, including biweekly supervision meetings, for the entire semester
