    Description

Bring Comfort and Peace of Mind Directly to a Neighbor

    Companionship Volunteers

    Position Type: In-Person / Patient-Facing (Local Community)

Time Commitment: Flexible (1–2 hours per week)

    Organization: Transition's Hospice

Title: Bring Comfort and Peace of Mind Directly to a Neighbor

At Transitions, we believe that exceptional care extends far beyond medical visits. For individuals navigating life's final journey, a friendly visitor can ease isolation, restore dignity, and bring immense emotional comfort.

Through our Companionship Volunteer program, you are matched with a patient in your immediate local area to provide vital social support and connection. Whether you are a retiree looking to give back, a student seeking meaningful experience, or a professional wanting to make a local impact, your presence is the greatest gift you can offer.

"A friendly face and a compassionate heart can change a difficult day into a peaceful one."

💬 What You Will Do as a Companionship Volunteer

Because this is a strictly non-medical, non-clinical role, your activities focus entirely on human connection and permitted socialization boundaries:

    • Active Listening & Conversation: Sharing stories, reminiscing, looking through old family photos, or just having a warm cup of tea and a chat.
    • Engaging Activities: Reading the local newspaper or a favorite book aloud, playing card games, working on puzzles, or listening to music together.
    • Quiet Bedside Presence: Holding a hand or simply sitting companionably so a patient knows they are safe and not alone.
    • Caregiver Respite: Sitting with a patient so their hard-working spouse or adult child can safely step away for an hour to take a nap, run an errand, or clear their mind.

👥 Who Makes an Ideal Companionship Volunteer?

    • Empathetic Visitors: You possess the warmth, life experience, and patience needed to connect beautifully across generations.
    • Boundary-Minded: You understand and respect volunteer limits. You will never handle medications, feed, lift, or perform physical hygiene care—our professional medical staff handles all clinical needs.
    • Reliable & Consistent: You can commit to visiting your matched patient consistently once a week at a time that works with your schedule.
    • Onboarding Ready: You are willing to complete a standard background check, drug screening, and a free TB test (all provided at zero cost by Transitions).

    🛠️ Training & Support Provided

We ensure you feel completely safe, confident, and prepared before your first visit:

    • Comprehensive, free hospice companion training that fits your schedule.
    • Ongoing support from our dedicated Volunteer Coordinator to match you with a patient close to your home.
