    Description

Volunteer with Girls Menarche Initiative: Menstrual Health, Girls Clinics & Youth Empowerment in Rural Uganda

    Organization: Girls Menarche Initiative (GMI)

    Location: Iganga District, Uganda

    Type: Volunteer (Local & International)

    About Girls Menarche Initiative

The Girls Menarche Initiative (GMI) is a youth-centered organization working to improve menstrual health, sexual and reproductive health education and safe spaces for young people in rural communities in Uganda.

Through school outreach programs, advocacy, product provision, youth engagement activities, gynae care and community initiatives, we ensure that young people especially menstruators have access to accurate information, dignity and supportive environments to learn and grow.

Our Girls Clinics provide safe spaces where adolescent girls can receive reproductive health information, menstrual health support, guidance from mentors, and referrals for professional health services when needed.

    Volunteer Opportunities

We are looking for passionate volunteers to support different parts of our work:

    Menstrual Health Education

Support our team in delivering menstrual health sessions in rural schools in Iganga. Volunteers help facilitate discussions, support learning activities, and help break stigma around menstruation.

    Girls Clinics Support

Assist during our Girls Clinics where young girls receive guidance on menstruation, reproductive health, body literacy, and wellbeing. Volunteers can help facilitate discussions, mentorship sessions, and youth-friendly learning activities.

Sexual & Reproductive Health Education (SRHR)

Help provide accurate and youth-friendly information to young people about reproductive health, relationships, and personal wellbeing.

    Arts, Creativity & Youth Expression

Support young people in expressing themselves through creative activities such as painting, poetry, storytelling, music, drama, and other art forms that build confidence and communication.

    Community Library Support

Assist in running activities in our public library where young people come to read, learn, and explore ideas in a safe and supportive space.

    Educational Materials & Design

Help design youth-friendly educational materials, posters, and guides on menstrual health and sexual and reproductive health.

    Who We Are Looking For

    We welcome volunteers who are:

    • Passionate about gender equality and youth empowerment
    • Interested in community development and public health
    • Open to working with young people in rural communities
    • Skilled in facilitation, art, education, communication, or design (not required but helpful)

Students, educators, artists, public health professionals, designers, and anyone interested in supporting young people are encouraged to apply.

    Why Volunteer with GMI

Volunteering with Girls Menarche Initiative gives you the opportunity to:

    • Work directly with young people in rural Uganda
    • Support programs that improve menstrual health and reproductive health education
    • Contribute to safe spaces like Girls Clinics and youth learning hubs
    • Gain experience in community outreach, youth engagement, and grassroots development

Together, we are working toward a future where menstruation is understood, supported, and never a barrier to education or opportunity.
