The Pre-Physician Assistant Medical Internship program in Ghana with SMWEF is a structured clinical rotation and public health program designed to offer international students seeking hands-on medical exposure, clinical shadow hours, and cultural immersion. The PA program operates year round in both public and private healthcare facilities and clinics settings, providing essential exposure to international healthcare delivery system.
SMWEF Ghana Pre-Physician Internship program provide international students with vital clinical hours, direct shadowing, and global health experience to strengthen their PA school applications.
Interns work from Monday to Friday with flexible durations of 5-6 hours a day 30 hours per week depending on the layout schedules at the hospital.
Intern Roles & Responsibilities
SMWEF Ghana unique clinical exposure allows international students to observe physician professional including:
- Conducting examinations, treatment strategies and procedure
- Measuring blood pressure, pulse, temperature and weight under watch
- Diagnosing illness
- Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests
- Referring patients to specialists
- Assisting with patient preparation, bed setups, and charting
- Shadowing surgeries
- Participating in community health screens, hygiene campaigns, and rural health clinic etc.

On weekdays, you will be taken to the hospital at 8am and brought back to your accommodation at 1-2pm for lunch. Afternoon provides opportunity for exploring the local community, enjoying the beach, hanging out with likeminded volunteers and interns in your accommodation, attending global health seminars, relaxing while reading your book, or shopping in the supermarkets in the community with your host family/coordinator.
You will also have the option to extend your clinical hours by returning to the hospital for an afternoon, evening or night shift allowing for a more comprehensive experience.
Weekends are free to explore whether participating in community health outreach programs, or engaging in preventive health education while immersing yourself in local communities and their culture. You can also choose to explore the tour attraction sites in Ghana such as a visit to the Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle, Kakum National Park, Canopy walkway, Museums, Art Centre, Markola Market, and Independence Square in Accra etc.

How to Volunteer for This Opportunity
- Volunteers on this program must be 18 years and above on the program start date and duration.
- Fluent in English
- Volunteers on this program must have at least a high school educational background.
- No prior requirement is required for this program, but medical placement volunteers must have relevant medical training and certification or should be currently studying medicine.
- Volunteers must be able to adapt to the environment and be flexible to learn and experience the culture in Ghana.
