    Description

    When disaster strikes—most often home fires—the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) is first on the scene to provide comfort, care, and immediate assistance. We are seeking compassionate and committed volunteers to join our team as DAT Trainees.

    Location & Commitment:

    Opportunities are available across multiple counties in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

    • Flexible shifts | 5–10 hours weekly or monthly
    • Must be able to respond to local disasters within 2 hours during on-call shifts

    What You’ll Do:

    • Respond with your team to local disasters to provide immediate support to individuals and families in need
    • Deliver essential assistance (such as food, clothing, shelter referrals, and emotional support)
    • Work alongside experienced team members and DAT leadership to assess needs and coordinate resources
    • Participate in team meetings, ongoing training, and skill development

    Qualifications:

    • Age 18+ with successful background check
    • Commitment to the Red Cross mission and willingness to complete required training
    • Reliable transportation to disaster sites (driver’s license preferred but not required)
    • Ability to remain calm and compassionate in stressful environments (adverse weather, uneven ground, smoke/poor air quality, etc.)
    • Strong communication and teamwork skills
    • Willingness to follow Red Cross standards, procedures, and COVID-19 safety policies
