    Description

    Services for the UnderServed (S:US) is a non-profit organization that believes that every New Yorker deserves to know home in NYC. S:US works with communities and individuals in every corner of the city and on Long Island to make sure every New Yorker has the chance to find home. S:US serves tens of thousands of New Yorkers each year facing poverty, homelessness, and life with disabilities. We create pathways to rich and productive lives through high-quality housing, employment, skills-building, treatment, recovery, food security, and eviction prevention services.

    Services for the UnderServed is seeking a detail‑oriented and creative Social Media Assistant volunteer to support the Marketing Communications department in managing and developing content for our digital channels. This volunteer position offers hands‑on experience in social media strategy, content creation, and community engagement while contributing to the visibility of a mission‑driven organization dedicated to helping New Yorkers in need.

    This volunteer opportunity provides meaningful exposure to digital marketing, visual storytelling, and brand communication and ideal for someone looking to build a portfolio and gain real‑world experience supporting a nonprofit organization.

    Responsibilities

    The Social Media Assistant Volunteer will collaborate with the Marketing Communications team to:

    • Assist in planning, drafting, and scheduling content across S:US’ social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Threads, Bluesky and TikTok).
    • Support day‑to‑day channel management, including monitoring comments, messages, and engagement activity.
    • Research and propose content ideas aligned with organizational priorities, campaigns, and awareness months.
    • Help maintain the content calendar and track deadlines for campaigns.
    • Monitor social listening to identify trends, relevant conversations, and opportunities for engagement.
    • Assist with basic analytics tracking to measure performance and inform future content decisions.
    • Assist in capturing photos and short‑form videos at select S:US programs, events, and staff activities for use on social platforms (travel required around the NYC boroughs to S:US program sites).
    • Help collect and document stories, quotes, and lived experiences from the people S:US supports to inform compelling digital content. You will assist in ensuring stories are gathered ethically, respectfully, and in alignment with consent guidelines.

    Preferred Skills

    • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a communications, marketing, journalism, digital media, or related program.
    • OR has professional experience in communications, marketing, journalism, digital media, or related experience
    • Strong writing skills with an understanding of social media tone, voice, and best practices.
    • Familiarity with major social platforms and emerging digital trends.
    • Experience with basic photo/video capture and editing.
    • Organized, proactive, and comfortable collaborating with staff across departments.
    • Interest in nonprofit communications and storytelling that highlights community impact.
