Volunteer Game Artist — AI Apps for Human Communication

Create the visual assets, character concepts, and environmental art that bring conversational simulations to life.

Crossing Party Lines is looking for a versatile Game Artist to join our Apps and Agents team. Your work will shape the visual tone of our communication role-plays, ensuring characters, interface elements, and environments feel grounded, relatable, and welcoming rather than sterile or caricatured.

What You’ll Do

• Create expressive 2D character portraits, expressions, and avatars representing diverse demographics and viewpoints.
• Produce environmental concept art and backdrops for scenario-based interactions (workplace settings, family rooms, public town halls).
• Design game-ready visual assets, icons, badges, and thematic UI elements.
• Work with UI/UX designers and technical leads to prepare and export assets cleanly for application integration.
• Help maintain visual consistency and tonal nuance across multiple prototype modules.

You May Be a Good Fit If You

• Have a portfolio demonstrating strong foundational art skills in character design, environments, or game UI.
• Can depict diverse people and everyday settings with realism, empathy, and respect.
• Are comfortable working with 2D digital art tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, Procreate, or equivalent).
• Can interpret early-stage narrative design needs into clear visual concepts.

Time, location, and support

This is a remote volunteer position. You may complete most of the work on your own schedule.

We hope volunteers can contribute approximately 8 or more hours per week, although hours are flexible. Team members should also be available for one or two online team meetings per week.

You will report to Lisa Swallow, co-founder of Crossing Party Lines and lead of the Apps and Agents team. You will work closely with other volunteers and developers and will receive background information, product specifications, and access to the CPL frameworks underlying the applications.
