    Description

Organization: Boston Outdoor Preschool Network (BOPN)

Location: Boston, MA (Arnold Arboretum, Sarah Roberts Elementary School) Commitment: Weekly sessions (spring season)

    About the Program

BOPN's Forest Days brings Boston Public School students outdoors for nature-based learning in the Arnold Arboretum and surrounding green spaces. Each week, pre-Kindergarten students (ages 3–5) walk, hike, explore, and learn in nature - building physical fitness, emotional wellbeing, and a lifelong love of the environment. Research shows that time in nature improves focus, reduces disruptive behavior, and supports children with IEPs and developmental differences.

    What Volunteers Do

    • Accompany small groups of young children on walks and hikes (approx. 1.5 mile round trip)
    • Support nature-based activities like watercolor painting, sensory exploration, and guided play
    • Assist lead educators with circle time, transitions, and safety
    • Model curiosity and enthusiasm for the natural world!

    Who We're Looking For

    • Patient, enthusiastic adults who love being outdoors
    • Experience with young children is a plus, but not required
    • Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule during the spring season
    • Must be comfortable in all weather conditions (we go outside rain or shine!)
    • Students from Northeastern and other local universities are especially welcome

    Why Volunteer?

    • Make a direct impact on the lives of underserved Boston children
    • Spend meaningful time outdoors in the beautiful Arnold Arboretum
    • Gain hands-on experience in early childhood education and nature-based learning
    • Join a warm, mission-driven community of educators and advocates
