    Description

Tanzania Education Corp is seeking a motivated and globally minded College & Career Advisor for a secondary school located in Makuyuni, northern Tanzania. This position requires an independent and entrepreneurial individual who is passionate about expanding educational opportunities for talented students from rural Africa.

    Background

Tanzania Education Corporation (TEC) is a Boston based NGO whose mission is to Educate the Future Leaders of Tanzania. TEC has worked with Tumaini Junior School, a high performing K–7 primary school in the town of Karatu since 2009. Tumaini Junior School has consistently ranked in the top 1% of schools in the country.

Tumaini Senior Secondary School is a six year (O and A levels) secondary school which opened in January 2016. Located an hour from Arusha in Makuyuni village, the school prepares high achieving students from rural backgrounds for competitive academic and professional opportunities.

    Program Development

This advising initiative is still in its early stages. During the past school term, a Post-Secondary Education Advisor piloted the program and began developing research and strategy for supporting Tumaini students in accessing post-secondary opportunities. The next advisor will build on this work and continue developing the program. Because the program is still a pilot, the role requires creativity, initiative, and comfort working in an environment where systems are still being built.

    Program Goals

    1. Support high-achieving students in pursuing postsecondary education and training opportunities.
    2. Research and expand pathways to universities, colleges, and vocational programs.
    3. Build partnerships with organizations that provide scholarships, application support, and career guidance.
    4. Expose students to career pathways through mentorship, professional connections, and career fairs.

    Responsibilities

    • Research and document tertiary education pathways for Tumaini students, including universities, colleges, and vocational training programs in Tanzania and internationally
    • Work with students, teachers, and school leadership to identify students’ strengths, interests, and potential career paths
    • Develop advising resources and structured guidance for students applying to universities, scholarships, and vocational programs
    • Design and deliver informational workshops and advising sessions for students on topics such as university applications, scholarships, and career planning
    • Build relationships with organizations that provide scholarship opportunities, application support, and post secondary access
    • Mentor a cohort of students pursuing university or alternative post secondary pathways
    • Collaborate with school leadership and TEC staff to develop strategies that expand post secondary opportunities for Tumaini students

    Qualifications

    • At least a bachelor’s degree
    • Strong research and organizational skills
    • Interest in international education, university admissions, or career advising
    • Experience mentoring students or working in education is highly desirable
    • Ability to work independently and build programs in a developing environment where structure is still evolving
    • International work experience in Africa is highly desirable
    • Cultural sensitivity, the ability to learn from and work successfully in a different culture

    Position & Compensation Details:

    • Start Date: June 15th 2026 ( beginning of the next school term)
    • Commitment: One Year
    • On-campus staff housing provided
    • $500 monthly stipend. TEC views you as an independent contractor and, as a result, you are responsible for all taxes owed.
    • One-way airfare to Tanzania at the start of employment and a return one-way airfare to the U.S. after at least 12 months, up to $1,700 total.
    • Relevant Tanzanian Visa fees (entry and work) will be paid by TEC
    • Reimbursement for TEC related out-of-pocket expenses
    • Three weeks of paid vacation during school closure.
    • Does not include costs of immunizations.
