Safety Squad Volunteer

Help children and families build safer futures through child abuse prevention education.

Safety Squad volunteers play a meaningful role in CARE House Child Safety Fairs and community education events. These volunteers help children and caregivers learn about personal safety, healthy boundaries, trusted adults, and how to respond to potentially unsafe situations in age-appropriate, supportive ways. This role is ideal for individuals who are compassionate, patient, and comfortable discussing topics related to child safety and abuse prevention. Safety Squad volunteers support Child Safety Fairs and help create safe, positive spaces where families can learn, connect, and feel supported.

What You'll Do

• Facilitate family-friendly child abuse prevention and safety activities
• Engage children and caregivers in conversations about safety, abuse prevention, and family education
• Support event set-up, logistics, and clean-up
• Help create a welcoming, safe, and positive environment for all participants

What We're Looking For

This role often involves discussing topics related to child safety, abuse prevention, and potentially dangerous situations. Volunteers should be comfortable having age-appropriate conversations with both children and caregivers about these subjects.

Experience or education in fields such as psychology, social work, education, counseling, criminal justice, child development, healthcare, or other helping professions is highly valued, but not required. Training and ongoing support are provided to all volunteers.

Scheduling & Location

Child Safety Fairs are held at various locations throughout Southeastern Michigan, primarily in Oakland County. Most events take place during evening hours.

Once volunteers have completed onboarding and become active members of the Safety Squad, they are added to our volunteer email list. Volunteers receive notifications about upcoming Child Safety Fairs and can choose which events fit their schedule by signing up individually as opportunities arise.

Requirements

• Ages 15+
• Comfortable discussing child safety and abuse prevention topics with children and adults
• Positive communication skills and a supportive attitude
• Ability to interact respectfully with diverse families
• Attend training as required
• Ability to successfully complete all required background checks and clearances
• Commitment to support at least two Child Safety Fairs or community events per year
