Mentoring Youth Ages 6 and Up Through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada

We are looking for adult males, ages 21 to 60, that would like to spend 4 to 6 hours a month mentoring a young male age 6 and up.

We have two types of programs:

1. Community Based Mentoring - you coordinate a time and day that works best for you and your Little Brother, hang out together for a few hours, then take him home. A one-year commitment is required, and you also must have your own transportation.
2. Site-Based Mentoring - you go to a school or community center once a week to meet with your Little Brother, hang out with him, and then go home. A commitment of September through May is required and you must have your own transportation.

How can you create an impact if you volunteer?

1. Help create positivity and potential for our youth in the future
2. Create and discuss experiences the youth may not have been able to experience on their own
3. Help youth deal with feelings, friends, family, coaches, and teachers
4. Help build positive relationships
5. Help build positive characteristics
6. Help children feel safe

Characteristics for a good mentor:

1. Good listener
2. Communicative
3. Not afraid to ask questions
4. Good with kids
5. Patient
6. Kind, friendly, easy to talk to
7. You don't have to be perfect; you just need to be present

Things you can discuss with your Little Brother:

1. Self-worth
2. Relationships with friends/family/teachers/coaches
3. Help with things they want to get better at (school, sports, hobbies, friendships)
4. How to ask for help when something is hard or you don't understand
5. How to handle feelings
6. What makes a good friend vs. a bad friend
7. What to do if someone is mean to you or one of your friends
8. Discuss good character traits and how to build their character
9. What makes your Little Brother happy or proud of themselves
10. Small goals they want to achieve over the next year

Did you have a mentor that helped you growing up? Teach kids something you wish you knew when you were younger. Help them expand their opportunities for their future.
