    Description

Broad Street Love Mail Service Volunteer

Every day, hundreds of guests visit Broad Street Love to check their mail—often their most vital link to benefits, identification, housing, healthcare, and loved ones. More than 4,000 people use BSL as their mailing address, making it one of the most essential services we offer. In fact, this single address has the most registered voters in Pennsylvania—a powerful reminder of how a stable address supports belonging, access, and dignity.

    What you’ll do:

As a Mail Service Volunteer, you’ll help make this service run smoothly and compassionately. Depending on the day’s needs, you may:

    • Sort, alphabetize, and file mail for guests’ mailboxes
    • Organize and prepare mail, including packages, for distribution
    • Greet guests at the mail counter and assist them in locating their mail
    • Answer phone calls or return messages from guests with mail-related questions

Through your presence and care, you’ll help ensure this busy service remains welcoming, organized, and trauma-informed.

    What we’re looking for:

    • Volunteers who are 18 years or older
    • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move between tasks during your shift
    • Fluency in English (for reading names, speaking with guests, sorting/alphabetizing, and handling phone calls)
    • Strong communication skills and a calm, respectful approach
    • Reliability—if you can’t make your shift, please cancel in Volunteer Hub so another volunteer can step in

Prior mail volunteer experience is helpful, but not required

    Why it matters:

Your volunteer time helps thousands of Philadelphians maintain stability and stay connected. When you volunteer with BSL’s Mail Service, you’re not just sorting mail—you’re delivering dignity, access, and Radical Hospitality.

If you have any questions about this role, please email our Volunteer Coordinator, Jessa Ruhf, at volunteer@broadstreetlove.org.
