    Description:

    Glen Brook Terrace is seeking one to two volunteers to guide English‑speaking residents in learning basic Mandarin and/or Cantonese. This opportunity is designed to help residents communicate with their Asian neighbors, build positive relationships, and strengthen community connection. Sessions may be held weekly, bi‑weekly, or monthly on Thursdays or Fridays in the afternoon, with a flexible start date beginning in July.

    Reports To:

    Volunteer Coordinator and the site’s Service Coordinator

    Goal of Position:

    To support cross‑cultural connection by helping English‑speaking residents develop basic Mandarin or Cantonese language skills for everyday communication.

    Specific Tasks:

    1. Prepare simple, engaging language lessons focused on basic conversation.
    2. Guide residents through pronunciation, vocabulary, and common phrases.
    3. Encourage participation and create a supportive learning environment.
    4. Answer questions and adapt lessons based on resident interest.
    5. Monitor attendance and ensure participants sign the sign‑in sheet.

    Qualifications:

    Physical/Age Requirements:

    • Able to stand and move around the room during sessions.

    Skills/Education/Experience:

    • Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese.
    • Friendly, patient, and open‑minded.
    • Interest in teaching language.
    • Previous teaching or facilitation experience is helpful but not required.
