This opportunity is best suited for individuals who can commit to long-term involvement (minimum 1 trimester: 13 weeks). It is not ideal for those looking for a one-time engagement.

The Adult Education Department of the Cultural Development and Wellness Center is a subsidiary of Aurora Mental Health and Recovery.

The Adult Education program is seeking classroom assistants for our Citizenship classes on Zoom. Classroom assistants support instructors by working with small groups of learners in breakout rooms, offering one-on-one assistance, and addressing other needs as requested by the teacher. Citizenship Classroom Assistants would join online classes dedicated to studying for the citizenship interview.

Teachers will prepare lessons; volunteers are not expected to do this. Classroom assistants must be willing to be flexible and able to move through a variety of directed tasks. They will never be expected to teach a whole class; they are only expected to facilitate prepared activities with small groups of students.

Classroom assistants help with various areas of the application process. The application process includes completing paperwork, demonstrating knowledge of basic civics, and completing both a speaking and a written portion.

Citizenship volunteers MUST be sympathetic to supporting refugee and immigrant students in this vulnerable move toward a challenging goal. Emotional intelligence, a clear, encouraging manner of engaging with students, and ideally, some understanding of trauma informed care, is essential to this position. Volunteers WILL NOT assist in the completion of citizenship applications due to sensitive legal concerns.

Currently, we need classroom assistants who are available during any of the days/times below:

    • Tuesday-Thursday 12:00-2:30pm (online)
    • Tuesday-Thursday, 6:00-8:30pm (online)

We ask that all volunteers be available for at least one 2.5-hour class per week for the duration of a13-week trimester. Online assistants must be comfortable using a computer and proficient with Zoom, as they will be expected to manage breakout rooms and share class materials on their screen. If you're not already familiar with these tools, training will be provided. All volunteers must demonstrate patience and flexibility while working with our dedicated learners.
