    About Us

    The Well of Mercy is a nonprofit, long-term transitional housing program providing safe, stable housing and a pathway to independence for women and their children in Chicago. Residents can stay for up to five years while completing education, securing employment, and rebuilding their lives. Our family-centered, dignity-driven approach blends stability, support, and opportunity for families overcoming homelessness and the impacts of domestic violence.

    Position Overview

    We are seeking committed, mission-aligned individuals to join our Board of Directors. Board members help shape the strategic direction, sustainability, and long-term impact of The Well. This role is ideal for someone who wants to use their professional expertise, leadership, and community connections to uplift women and children building new chapters of their lives.

    This is an unpaid volunteer leadership position.

    What You’ll Do

    • Provide strategic guidance on organizational planning, funding priorities, and future growth
    • Support fundraising efforts by leveraging your network and participating in campaigns/events
    • Offer governance and oversight, ensuring transparency, accountability, and ethical practice
    • Advise on programming and operations alongside the Executive Director and leadership team
    • Serve as an ambassador for The Well within your professional and personal communities
    • Attend quarterly board meetings, virtual or in-person, with optional committee participation
    • Help sustain long-term stability through thoughtful policy, partnership, and resource guidance

    What We’re Looking For

    We welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds, lived experience, and professional expertise, especially in:

    • Nonprofit leadership or governance
    • Finance, accounting, or budgeting
    • Fundraising, philanthropy, or development
    • Housing, social work, family services, or community-based programs
    • Entrepreneurship, business strategy, or operations
    • Legal, HR, compliance, or organizational development
    • Communications, marketing, or public relations

    Ideal candidates are collaborative, thoughtful, mission-driven, and able to commit to regular engagement.

    Time Commitment

    • Approximately 3–6 hours per month
    • Quarterly board meetings
    • Optional subcommittee involvement or event support
