    Description

    Position Overview

As the inaugural Communications Specialist, you will be creating the identity of Abundantly Funded Minds. You will lead AFM in our communications and public relations efforts, acting as the manager of our social media handles, website, and content. Your sense of humor and love for storytelling and art will introduce and refine our presence in the world.

Values of accountability, reciprocity and interdependence, honesty and transparency, community and belonging, and growth and transformation guide our team. We're a team of advocates, professionals, healers, educators, and everything in between. We understand that how we do anything is how we do everything, and from ourselves, ripples will be created that stretch across our communities and systems. We consistently strive to embody a fractal of solidarity, creativity, and healthy resilience to navigate life’s immediate challenges and foster sustainable, long-term change that prevents and heals harm.

This role is an unpaid volunteer position and will work closely with the Executive Director. We expect to provide compensation commensurate with our fundraising efforts.

    Key Responsibilities

    Communication and Content Creation (55%)

    • Lead the development and implementation of our founding communications strategies that support the organization's overall goals, such as fundraising, brand visibility, and public awareness.
    • Craft compelling and authentic content, from blog posts and social media updates to newsletters and fundraising appeals, that highlights our mission and impact.
    • Keeping content and AFM’s communication channels up-to-date
    • Adapt existing materials for various communication channels, such as handbooks, executive summaries, and funder briefs

    Branding (40%)

    • Create consistent branding across all platforms — tone, visuals, and storytelling that resonate and authentically represent our audience. Provide brand guidance to staff and departments to ensure a cohesive organizational identity.
    • Guide and oversee our selected social media platforms, website, and email marketing.

    Advocacy (10%)

    • Foster connections with volunteers, partners, and community members through direct communication and event coordination. Represent the nonprofit at community meetings and events to raise awareness and inspire participation.
    • Manage media inquiries, draft press materials, and build positive relationships with journalists and media outlets.
    • Attend as many meetings and events, advocate for AFM within your ecosystem, and remain informed on developments in your field.

    Who We’re Looking For

We’re searching for an individual who is ready to grow alongside us—a proactive team player who isn’t afraid to learn, experiment, fail, and share innovative ideas.

    Ideal Candidate Profile

    • Lived Experience: At least 18 years old, with lived experience or familiarity with being labeled “at-risk”, navigating alternative education, or the juvenile or court systems.
    • Passion: Deep commitment to uplifting the economic and health mobility of Boston’s Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities.
    • Personal Growth: Committed to expanding your emotional and spiritual resilience, engaging in challenging yet rewarding conversations, and continuous self-improvement.
    • Interests: Keen on social justice, interest in public policy, public health, neuroscience, poverty prevention, harm reduction, economic mobility, and/or community activism; eager to learn new skills in fundraising, board recruitment, financial literacy, and program management

    Preferred Qualifications and Skills

    • Experience with social media management (especially Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn) and email marketing tools
    • Strong writing and storytelling abilities for engaging blog posts, newsletters, and fundraising materials.
    • Prior experience in public relations, marketing, communications, or other relevant fields.
    • Familiarity with design software like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite for visually appealing content.
    • Understanding of SEO, website management, social media, and content management best practices.
    • Knowledge of financial literacy, community development, or social justice issues
    • Experience in executing communication strategies that support fundraising and community engagement.
    • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
    • Skills in organizing community events that promote engagement and advocacy
    • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex issues into clear and compelling content.
    • Creative design skills and an ability to translate conceptual ideas into compelling visual representations in both digital and print media
